I think the use of the word 'failure' is being used on the 20,000 feet view of the film's ultimate goal which is to make a ton of money, which is realistically drastically underperforming for Sony. In the studios eyes I think this film is far from the success they were hoping.

In terms of the mainstream, the fans that have come out of it and children it's touched and affected... a total win for them. And that's great! All kids need their heroes and you can't take that from them.

On a costuming scale... you know it's weird.... I don't approve on this film personally, but I have to say I wouldn't at all roll an eye at the costumers sporting the new suits. Ghostbusters as a whole is great. I just feel the new movie is all kinds of wrong and not what it could have been. It'll be nice seeing a mix of men and women GB costumers sporting their own custom suits at cons. I fully support that.

You are right, it touched some young children's lives and might have become an instant classic to them. That is s win in a way.
Look back at some of our favorite films from childhood that might not have been a huge box office success, yet are cult classics to the movie fans of that generation. Look at A Christmas Story, that lasted a couple weeks before it was yanked from theaters. Today it is loved. This could flop today in the theaters but in 20 years it could strike a nostalgic chord in people who saw it as a child, and it could start to grow in popularity. Some day on forum like the RPF, there could be a prop section dedicated to building props from this film. :lol

yeah......but i doubt even sony would fudge box office info. that's probably a crime on the books somewhere.

all I can go by is what moviefone shows...

At least our friends in the UK and Australia seem smarter than us. they seem to have avoided this like the plague...
Say what you want about the Chinese government, but at least this time they are right in protecting their population from the vat of nuclear waste that is this reboot.

I don't think a lot of children saw the reboot. Their parents took them to see Finding Dory and the Secret Life of Pets. The box office totals point to it. As much as Sony ran those awful commercials on Nickelodeon, I don't think it struck any popularity with that many kids. The boys and girls that are junior GBs in our franchise all have completely ignored this movie. They all want nothing to do with it.

Also, with the reboot having no male protagonist form the boys to relate to, the boys seem to think the reboot as being 'girly'. But then again,.....like Feig said.......the reboot wasn't made for them. So I guess the boys will gravitate towards Star Wars, Marvel, DC, TMNT and Power Rangers. If this is truly the case, then the future of GB is truly bleak.

From a personal stand point: I have made GB uniforms, proton packs and other props for my boys and I don't think they have touched the GB gear since last Halloween. One of my sons handed me his GB uniform and told me he no longer wants anything to do with GB. He wants to be General Hux this Halloween. The oldest son, who dresses up as part of our franchise since 2007, has dropped GB all together and has spent the last year accumulating a 501st grade costume of Kylo Ren.

I think the only kids you are seeing going to this thing are kids of GB fan boys and girls.

and, like i said before, women dressing up, and girls dressing up is most likely nothing new before and after this movie.
just some people would like to make you think it just started. like that photo of a girl looking up to an actress she has no idea about...and is probably thinking 'gee, that's a nice lady in a good looking dress'

A lot of butt hurt in this thread towards this film. If you didn't like it fine say your part and move on. Put the torches and pitchforks down people.

Agreed. But, there is a lot of support and middle of the road posts. I started out with a 'What the heck?' attitude, then dug int the back story of how the movie was made and came to my own conclusion. It got made, people need to move on and accept it or dont. It is another film that will stand on its own merit. But most of all, it was a learning experience for me in the behind the scenes process and the money that follows. I really was interested in learning about the financial forecasts and timing of the release date.

It will be interesting to see if it sparks future GB movies even if it doesnt turn a profit.

Finally made myself go see this...whew. There is a lot of good elements in this, stuff that COULD have made a great movie, but they bogged it down with way too many jokes that droned on and on (My Cat) and situational elements that just had nothing to do with anything that was going on in the story. Holtzmann was amazing, and probably the best part of the whole thing. McCarthy got pretty annoying pretty quick, and I have no previous experience with that actress going in, so I didnt know what to expect. The wonton gag needed to end an hour before it did.

So overall, not horrible, but not even close to great. It had elements of both, and in the end, its unfortunate they couldnt weed out the garbage and leave the gems.

So a majority of RPFers enjoyed it according to the reviews here. It seems a dis service if you continue to say "it's crap" without seeing it. Most have said the trailers don't really do justice to the movie.

Also, feel free to hate it and hope it dies but this movie failing pretty much guarantees the franchise being shelved before they trot it out again.Pretty much a self fulfilling prophecy.

This has been bugging me since they announced the female cast. No boys in there at all means no boys will touch the franchise.

It was idiotic of Sony not to step in and demand at least some male GB's. If the studio was launching a new GB movie to sell toys to boys, they would have stipulated at least one (or more) girls be in there too just to avoid shutting out the girl market. They would never have made this mistake going the other way, not in the 21st century. And it's much harder to sell a "girl franchise" to boys than vice versa.

I hope Sony is satisfied with Feig. His anti-male bias (and their enabling support) has cost them a couple hundred million bucks. Selling a great big round of GB toy merchandise after a GB reboot, and getting at least one sequel out of it, should have been so easy.

The reboot is failing in its own merits. And it deserves to fail. The way Pascal and Sony treated Reitman and completely ignoring the fans. Sony dug their own grave. So GB gets shelved again for X number of years. It is not a big franchise like SW, Marvel, etc. anyway.

That's fine with me. I'm a less is more type and don't view things as "franchises" that need to be carried on in perpetuity. Ghostbusters does not need to be a "franchise". Movie screens are polluted with enough of those. Ghostbusters was a great MOVIE. The sequel was, eh. The cartoons sucked. But, it only ever should've been one movie. And, any real hope of it being a "franchise" died long ago. Just like The Beatles will never play together again, so too should Ghostbusters be left respectfully alone and enjoyed for what it was rather than sullied by lesser stewards.

Rotten Tomatos has a 73 percent positive rating. So the majority of people liked it.
All you haters...I'm laughing in your face! :lol

You lose.

Laughing? Did you notice the audience score is 58% ? And, what's the top critic (ie professional critics) score? And, the odds of this movie making its money back are 3,720 to 1. Lose? Yep. They did.

I lost years ago when Murray refused to go along and get along with Ramis. What could have been. Sigh. I think they could have really
made a big comeback from GBII but I guess in some other parallel universe I am laughing watching it now.

That being said.it's not a knock out oft the park exactly....

Finishing in what is currently a tie for third place with Lights Out was Sony's Ghostbusters reboot, which dropped 53% for an estimated $21.6 million. The drop is just a step above the 51.4% average when you compare to other films that had similar opening weekends and also scored a "B+" CinemaScore, but for director Paul Feig and star Melissa McCarthy this is a much larger drop than they are used to. The duo's three previous films together saw an average 34.4% second weekend drop. Ghostbusters carries a $144 million budget and has grossed $86.8 million so far domestically and just over $120 million worldwide.

As Supporters of this movie always like to point out, our first two movies and two animated series are ALWAYS there, so, I'm PERFECTLY happy with the franchise dying if this is the kind of unintelligent drivel we get. and you CAN tell that much just by going by the trailers that it's going to be a modern, stupid, adam sandler style comedy.

especially if this is all SJW tumblerites can do to promote it. rather than talking about the great oscar winning acting talents of leslie jones and mellisa mcarthy. or the great 100% original script. or the fantastic blue screen special effects where when slimer pops out of the cart, the girls are totally looking way too far to the right to be believable...
Growing up in the 80s, I never really knew a dumb woman character other than kelly bundy. I've also seen smart and intelligent women as far back as 60s shows... in fact, i'm seeing far more dumb male characters these days than the other way around.

.

it was interesting reading that video game article recently posted... and seeing how the guy who did most of the leg work got rooted out due to a company buy out for credit.

but what was most interesting was to see that bill murray really DID just phone in his lines haphazardly. and the reason other scenes where cut, was because he didn't show up again after two days!

Even though I think Dan lost it after using aliens and 9/11 in the same sentence (probably due to dealing with bill and these sony idiots), it was interesting hearing him almost describe murray as the ******* ass we all think he is. but you could see him visibly stop himself, because he knew he'd get flamed for talking how the probably all talk about each other behind the scenes.

Sony might have caught their mistake late. Why else is there a boy on the packaging of the Feig Pack.

Saw Star Trek today and amazingly - they still had multiple showings of 2D and 3D of Ghostbusters at the theater! :p
