The Dark Humor person in me wants to do a joke/jab at me for tomorrow....but too many kill joys would get upset so i'll leave it alone :).

Tomorrow night is early dooms day, with full on Friday being the first sign of test.

we all pretty much know what's in the movie at this point. we've seen it in the trailers.
The questions are as follows:
do people care that it's basically a femenist hate campaign?
do people care that sony is run by ignorant ********?
do people care they've been insulted every step of the way?
Do people know OR care about the history of this movie? the only reason it got made is because pascals femenist project, glass ceiling, didn't?

In the past, when you attack your audience, it usually is a death knell. these days, people are so crazy, you CAN attack your audience, and people love it.

a long weekend to find out :)

then, onto hating he-man, i guess. maybe sony'll have learned their lesson by then. but i doubt it.

this is interesting. a video from a guy who's not a fan, and has only seen the original once as a kid. but hates the new movie.

I can answer these right now...

do people care that it's basically a femenist hate campaign?

No... Your average viewer doesn't know any of this complaining. Most people watch movies for fun and don't follow every little thing behind the scenes. Also it's not. It's one person's take that the studio thought would be fun. Fans made it the **** show it is. It's like hearing about the Anti-Men campaign that Mad Max Fury Road apparently was. A small percent of loud Mad Max fans who felt betrayed.

do people care that sony is run by ignorant ********?

Nope. They would have no idea.

do people care they've been insulted every step of the way?

No one has been insulted who will see the movie... They only insulted people who felt insulted in the first place. Our money isn't what makes up the profit... or else no one would have seen Transformers.

Do people know OR care about the history of this movie? the only reason it got made is because pascals femenist project, glass ceiling, didn't?

Nope... And the history is way less complicated and less conspiracy driven than discussions here would imply. The one thing I've learned from the little I've seen behind the curtain, is for the most part people are just making movies, and trying to market them. No one sets out to make a bad movie, believe it or not, maybe just not the movie the fans want.

The only thing I've seen from this entire production was the sound design was being done next to a project I was on... Feig was there in his suit every day overseeing it. This is the single most boring, mind numbing part of production, and he was there every morning til end of day.

So if he called it in, it was from the phone in his suit pocket, in the same room the movie was being worked on.

Again, weren't most - if not all - of the Sony execs responsible for greenlighting this take of film let go from the company? Pascal and her boss? So pretty much the only two WITH the power to greenlight are gone...

Just picked up the tickets for my girlfriend and me for a screening tomorrow!

Amazing or awful, I've been having a blast enjoying the anticipation, discussion, podcasts, merch, fandom, and documentaries. For those of you that are against it, I hope the reboot has brought you some sort of enjoyment-- maybe Ecto Cooler, the visual history book, or whatever.

Although it's not what I would have done if given the keys to the franchise, I can positively say that I'm all in. From what I've heard from people I generally agree with on movies, I'll be digging it.

I'm spending my evening kicked back, listening to some soundtrack vinyl.

Just saw a commercial during Adult Swim that showed Bill's cameo. You'd think they'd save that for the theater.

I Think that Amy was at the top during the whole debacle. She had a current contract to produce GB2016 at the time of her firing so she got to run with it.

PLEASE watch this interview with Amy Pascal. You can start at the beginning but forward to the 2:00 mark. Watch her mannerisms....It will answer all the questions about 'what the hell was she thinking'. Im thinking the TV show 'Intervention'.

Wow, do the words bitter and 'broken record' mean anything to you? Do you really hate women in lead roles that much? You must really hate the subtext that one of them is gay then. (Basically confirmed by the director as 'we could have said more but the studio wouldn't like it')
Also: if you're going to use the word so much, learn to spell 'Feminist', and remember, it's pronounced: 'rational person'

I don't know what she was on, but watching the mannerisms, why did i think sandra bernhart for some reason? haven't thought of her since rossanne days.

She's slurring her words and kind of goes into a jay leno impression at times. I'm still not sure what was said, other than the fact that i'm powerful, I know it..and hollywood actors are egotistical asses.

I don't know. seeing the people actually in charge of ghostbusters now? and that they are all a bunch of arrogant idiots? I hope everything they produce fails.
and it baffles me as to why not just more people, but EVERYONE doesn't think this way when you see stuff come out. is the rest of hollywood any better?

hell no. or is it hell naww? this one just got caught at it.

why reward people like this, just because it's a franchise you love? i just don't get it

GB16 is currently beating The Secret Life of Pets for advanced ticket sales on Fandango-- pretty cool!

http://deadline.com/2016/07/ghostbusters-the-secret-life-of-pets-fandango-1201785842/

You forgot to mention the whole opening line of the article where they expect the reboot to finish in second place to Secret Life of Pets:

"While Sony’s femme-reboot of Ghostbusters is expected to take second place to Illumination Entertainment/Universal’s titan The Secret Life of Pets with respective weekend grosses of $40M-plus to $50M-plus, Fandango’s advance tickets sales for the Paul Feig-directed live action comedy tell another story. "

The reboot must be selling tickets somewhere, but not in my neighborhood. Most theaters have no reserve seat sales during the busy Saturday afternoon when matinee ticket prices are cheaper. According to Box Office Mojo, Secret Life of pets cost $75 million to make and has taken in $131 million domestically and almost $174 million worldwide. The reboot cost $150 million to make and is expected to take in $40 to $50 million domestically. Do the math and there is something seriously wrong with this picture. And there is some article saying that the reboot will have to make $500 million plus in order to green light additional Ghostbusters projects in the future.

I didn't forget-- I just decided to not post it. The headline is current and factual, the expectations of box office sales aren't. We'll see what it does this weekend. I wouldn't be shocked if it came in second-- animated films that do well are hard to go up against. Then again, I wouldn't be shocked if GB16 snags first. Positive word of mouth is getting out there, in spite of negative reviews.

If GB16 comes in second in the BO, it wouldn't be the first time a GB film lost out to major summer competition. GB2 went up against BATMAN and lost horribly. Even if GB16 was a traditional sequel directed by Reitman, it would have a tough time against a popular animated feature with good word of mouth.

Personally, BO draw isn't a big factor for me, as I don't have any financial investment in the film. BO draw as sports scores was always a goofy thing to me. I want to enjoy it first and foremost. If it does gangbusters at the BO and brings us more content, right on.

There's an article out there circulating online now that has some interesting feig quotes.
honestly. the dude gets more smug and annoying and playing the victim card every time I read something from him.

>>“I’ve talked with Ivan [Reitman] about this, too. It was about starting a business and going against the government because the EPA was going to shut them down. Me, I care more about underdogs and the idea of people trying to find their place in the world. And on top of that, the idea of legitimacy: How important is it to be legitimate publicly versus getting fulfillment from being legitimate privately?”>>

The first part. in his initial pitch, the bad guys main goal was to 'make the government look like fools'... and here he thinks the original ghostbusters where all about anti government stuff?

>>>>'But for me, that’s the theme that I’m able to latch onto which is the idea of, what is legitimacy?”'>>>
because that's what should drive a comedy.... not a great idea, or a great situation, or funny gags...or good actors..

>>“We want the guys who loved the original to come along for the ride, but there’s a whole new generation that I want to have that same experience that we all had when we were younger, when we got the Ghostbusters fervor,” says Feig.>>

he never had it. he's said it himself. 'men aren't funny'. i bet he never even saw anything more than a trailer till he got hounded for the job.

>>The original Ghostbusters theme song, I add, is still the dirtiest movie theme song ever made. Just ask Ray Parker Jr. “Exactly!” He laughs.>>

apparently no one did for advice on the new theme song. oops..

>>One joke he fought the powers that be to keep in was a particularly naughty fart joke, memorably delivered by McKinnon’s Holtzmann, as she cheekily tests Erin’s threshold upon their first meeting. “Those are my favorite kinds of jokes,” Feig laughs. “There was a lot of consternation about that one, too, but I was like, ‘NO, I’m not giving that one up! It’s too funny.’”>>>

sigh.

>>he remembers. “This little girl, looking fierce. I burst into tears. This is why we’re doing it. It’s not for all these guys!”>

And this, right here... is the REAL reason people have been in such a frenzy and take it so personally. Why DO you do a movie like ghostbusters, with a 30 year history if NOT for the fans? and it's not just GUYS, paul. it's the lady fans your ******** on too! or don't they count? you already had women with daughters and men with daughters loving this franchise, and now, you're driving them away!

don't be afraid to cry paul. we've been doing it for years.

In one day, the waiting begins.

Rant#1

I haven't seen it but I found the best way to sum up my apprehension.

I like Feig's films. His brand of humor is so distinctive it informs the character of each film regardless of the genre.
That's why Bridesmaids isn't known simply as a romantic comedy - It's first and foremost a Paul Feig movie.
That's why Spy isn't known as a comedy-thriller - it's first and foremost a Paul Feig movie.

Ghostbusters isn't a genre film. It has a specific character that blended both horror and comedy in ways unexpected in the 1980's.

I feel the natural character of the director and the IP at odds. I fear the film coming across as a Feig movie where the humor is restrained by the rules of the IP and by having to be littered by obligatory callbacks. This is not where Feig traditionally shines. The best possible case would be if they had found some natural common ground between the director and the source material which would have made for a fantastic movie, but that's not at all what I got from the trailers.

The same principle would apply if I found out that Quentin Tarantino was directing a Marvel film. I would feel uneasy because Tarantino, like Feig, is an iconoclast. Each one of his films is a Tarantino film more than anything else. Like Feig he likes to bend genre which is something that could only harm existing and beloved IPs like Ghostbusters or the MCU.

Rant#2

I think there was an opportunity for something special with Feig and the basic Ghostbuster premise.

I was there in the 80's and saw Ghostbusters in the theater. It was terrific because, as I said before, this caliber of horror/fantasy combined with this caliber of comedy was absolutely novel. It was great for its time. But, for me it's not a perfect movie. It started off as horror with the librarian scene which was genuinely scary and genuinely funny at the same time. The film later seems to abandon the scares in favor of more fantasy which I didn't like as much. I loved the film but really wanted it to stay in that realm of being actually scary.

If he were so inspired I think Feig could have managed that concept that Ghostbusters didn't sustain. I imagine it would have been about a team of "ghost busters" but with no ties to the Ghostbusters IP. In this case if it could manage both true horror and true comedy it would be a feat. It's so difficult to straddle that line without the humor undermining the horror or the horror overwhelming any possibility of humor. But I got a taste of that in the beginning of the first Ghostbusters film and I've been waiting since then for an entire movie that could expertly manage that perfect balance.

I see Feig's sense of humor fitting in to this mold. This could have been this movie. But from what I already understand it's not.

glad someone jumped on it.:behave

Well what does it say about the RPF that a not even thinly veiled accusation that the CEO of Sony Pictures rise to her position not on merit but some other means? Do we wonder why there are so few women participating in these conversations? It's a pretty hostile environment.
