Getting started with 3D Modeling armor and helmets?

I see a ton of amazing 3D modeled armor and helmets, and it's a skill I would love to have. I currently know Solidworks and zBrush, neither of which seem particularly suited for doing this type of stuff. I was wondering if anybody had any resources to learn this kind of hard-surface modeling, the best programs, etc. I'm willing to put in the time, just looking for a starting point!

Blender is ideally suited for hard body modelling. There are a ton of online tutorials, plus books and some excellent online courses, such as those offered by CGCookie.com. It also exports obj files so that they can be used by Pepakura.

Plus Blender is totally free. I'm loving it, and even though I'm a slow learner, I've ,managed to produce quite a few pep files and finished helmets and armour.
