Getting smells out of rubber...

I have this varnish/painting respirator from years ago and I found it the other day, but when I put it on it smelled of smoke. I took the filter parts off (they were empty anyway) and it still smelled of smoke. Any ideas how I can get the smell out?

Clean it with Fabreeze...if they have that in the U.K.

Or perhaps let it sit in some sort of citrus based cleanser? But then it may reek of oranges, don't know which is worse.:unsure

I'd much rather smell oranges than smoke :lol

I'll see about getting some febreeze or something. Thanks for the suggestions.

you could always give it a heavy dusting with baking soda powder, let it sit for 24 hrs. then wash/blow off the powder, the smell should then stay with the powder, not the rubber...
