Game of Thrones

What Lyanna made Ned promise certainly wasn't to ensure that she'd be buried in Winterfell's Catacombs. That'd be to easy and it would normally go without saying (Apologies King Robert). Plus if that was indeed the promise, why would fulfilling it continue to haunt Ned? Wouldn't burying her in Winterfell After all, Ned lost both his brother and his father to the same family and he didn't get a chance to say his goodbyes to them, yet they don't haunt his memories like Lyanna's promise does.

No. Lyanna made Ned promise her something that he still kept to his last moments. Something that no doubt took a toll on him over the years. Something that he kept to himself even from those he loved the most dear. If you take a key symbolic moment from the first episode at face value, you should know the answer to what the question really was.

Seriously? Ghost's fur color wasn't a dead giveaway?

Hmmm.

Are you saying Jon is Lyanna's kid, not Ned's? I'm one of those readers who goes through these books so fast that I miss quite a bit of subtext sometimes

One of the favored theories of Jon's parentage is that he's the child of Lyanna and Rheagar, conceived after Rhaegar abducted her.

Think about it.

The promise was made around the time when the war against the Mad King was over. Ned knew that the Lannisters were going to kill every single Targaryen they could find, child or not. And Robert in the books swore again and again that he would see every last Targaryen dead. Ned had to tell everyone that Jon was his ******* child because if word ever got out that the Starks were harboring a Targaryen child, ******* of a Stark or not, they would want Jon dead. And imagine what would happen to the Starks if all of Seven Kingdoms learned that they took in a Targaryen? And worse, if Cersei knew that the son of the woman Robert kept naming during their intimate nights together.... . . oOoo. Not good.

Ned Stark. He lived up to his honor even though he was lying to everyone around him, including Catelyn. Gosh, Catelyn. If only she knew that Ned didn't cheat on her.

Oh, I agree. It's the one that makes the most sense to me. :)

Of course, based on how A Dance with Dragons ends...

Let's hope Melisandre is as good at reviving as Thoros, the other red priest. Otherwise his parentage doesn't really matter. And if she does bring Jon back, well, his oath to the Night Watch was only to death, no longer. Interesting loophole.

Rhaegar never abducted her. They ran off together. After the tourney at Harenhal where the mysterious knight of the laughing tree defeated the 3 knights, Rhaegar fell in love with Lyanna and she with him after she heard his song. They ran off together because Rhaegar was already married and Lyanna was betrothed to Robert. I believe it was totally mutual and that R+L=J. Probably the most truly romantic aspect to the whole ASOIAF story.

If you're saying Jon Snow is a Targaryen, then how come many of the Night's Watch say he looks like Ned Stark? Also, since it appears Targaryens are immune to fire, how did Snow burn his hand while defending Mormont from the white walkers?

Ugh, someone isn't paying attention. Not every Targaryen is born with those fire immune abilities. Viserys, a pure blooded Targaryen was killed when hot melted gold was poured over his head. He was not a "dragon". His sister Dany is a dragon.

And no where in the show does it state what Rhaegar Targaryen looked like, or even Lyanna. Who's to say that Jon Snow didn't take on most of Lyanna's features like Sansa took on most of Catelyn's features? Lyanna was Ned's sister after all and was also a Stark, so resembling a Stark isn't out of the realm of possibility.

And here's another tidbit that's given in the first book. When Jon is fighting the Wight and lights the curtain on fire, the heat was the most comfortable thing he felt in his entire life..... :O

With the increasing emergence of "high magic" I am certain that Jon Snow is not done for, now whether he is ressurected, goes revenant like Catelyn, he spirit jumps into Ghost and takes lessons from Bran, or something completely different, I know it's going to be fun to read.

I am also dying to find out what's going on with Brienne and the eventual return of Nymeria (Arya's Direwolf) are also high on my list of things to look forward to in the next books / finale

Yes, the most likely scenario is that Jon is half Targaryen and half Stark. He just seems to favor his Stark side more than his Targaryen is all. Check out the FAQ at Westeros.org. It goes into far more detail than I can here about the theory of Jon's parentage.

Actually, it's explicitly stated on multiple occasions that Arya favors Lyanna's appearance and personality quite a bit. Lyanna definitely looked like a Stark and it's quite possible that her son favors the Stark side of his inheritance just as Arya does.

Sansa even went so far as to wonder if Arya was a ******* as well as Jon because she was the only child who didn't favor their mother's appearance until Catelyn set her straight.
