Futuristic Clothing Ideas

Hey everyone -

I'm in the very early stages of a fan film, the considering and concept stage, and I'm kind of stuck on concept clothes. The basic idea of the clothes is to have modern look (90's and 2000's) but with futuristic production. Pretty much the movie takes place in the near distant future and the main character likes the "old school" look and refuses to conform and has all his clothes custom made.

The main characters outfit resembles Jack Bauer's outfit in the sense that he will be wearing denim jeans, a long sleeve shirt, a ballistics vest, and a coat of some sort.

The idea I had for the jeans is to have the "shaved" look, meaning no pockets or anything like that, but in reality the pockets are "hidden" in the seams and use velcro to keep them sealed (as well as a velcro zipper).

The shirt I want to have the Commando Sweater look but with updated fabrics.

Everything else - I'm burnt out on. I've been in weapons and gadget mode and just can't seem to switch into clothing mode.

Any ideas are majorly appreciated!

Thanks,
-Kyle Morgan

First thing that comes to mind is no seams. I would assume future clothes wouldn't have seams, as well as hidden pockets. Built in belts. No shoe laces. I guess I'm thinking along the lines of streamlined/sterile, yet still functional.

Maybe you should contact our member "Guri", she´s a professional costume designer for tv and movies. I´m pretty sure she has a few ideas and most importantly can point you towards a few companies that rent sell stuff at a good price.

Otherwise I think that jt´s ideas are a good starting point, though would involve a lot of sewing work to be done convincingly.

Is this something you want to have custom made, or are you looking for places that have existing clothes that kinda match what you're looking for?

Everything would be customs made. I've sewn quite a bit of items for my Umpiring equipment and I feel quite comfortable sewing the vest with ease, but I'll probably outsource the rest. Probably to a fellow talented RPFer.

JT - I like your idea. I had the same Idea at first but the main character is attached to the past and would definitely want them to have pockets. He doesn't want to stick out like a huge sore thumb, but he still wants to be comfortable in his own right.

I drew up the basic idea in my head for people to see -

If he's gonna wear jeans I wouldn't change the jeans at all. Levi's haven't really changed as far as the look for over a century. A classic look never really changes by much. It's the accessories that change over the years. Remember the rage of the hipsack? You could always change the look of the fabric itself to give it a futurstic edge to it.
I think of Back to the Future 3 as far how extremes go. Those autolace shoes are clearly eighties but if you watch Bladerunner alot of the attire is vintage classic like Deckards ensemble. Clearly not THIS time but not so extreme would could not wear it today without being too far off.

I'm no expert in this field but over the years what I wear hasn't really changed by much as I always enjoyed a timeless look.

Yup, unless you want to establish important story elements, i.e. groups, professions, social status, a mix out of "vintage" clothing (nowadays), unusual accessoires (curse you blackberry and iphone, can it get more difficult to establish something futuristic now ?!) and props (cars are great, as is printed stuff like ads etc.) should set a mood.

I guess there´s a lot of designers out there that have interesting takes on fashion, maybe a look into "experimental" fashion might help ?

It´s a common mistake that the near-future or even the past often is establish by using stuff from a very short period of design, i.e. in a movie set in the 1950ies, where are the 1940ies cars ?

No no no. The women will be dressed like this. Joking of course but on a serious note for a sec this is what I'm talking about. She's wearing a basic tunic and other than the extreme length and the belt accessorie not that extreme. Compare this to someone like Luke Skywalkers costume or even Han Solos. Just a little bit of tweaking from the norm to give it that edge.

As opposed to trendsetting that becomes rediculous. Either in time or at that moment.
