Functional TK Commlink

So after the 3 piece comlink I made thanks to "The Shlitzie" I got my mind working and decided to build a "Functional" TK commlink... at first I looked for some walkie talkies that were small enough to gut and then put them on the comlink but failed... Than it hit me.

I had a bluetooth headset that I rarely use with my phone, so I opened it and removed the earpiece and replaced it with the smallest speaker i had... and it works....

I will post a video soon but you get the idea, you make a call using your phone and talk and listen through the Commlink. So you can talke to anyone that has a phone... :)

There are things that need to be improved.

1. Volume of the speaker is not great you have to be very close to the device because it does not have enough power. I have ordered more speakers of higher impedance to see if it improves. And also I have redesigned the Hovi mic tip to funnel the sound like a horn.

2. I need to place a push button for turning on and answering calls directly from the Commlink. This should be easy.

3 need to make a hole on the bottom for the mic to listen better.

4. To recharge the device i will probably just unscrew the bottom cap retrieve the BT device and once charged put it back together... so I dont make any more modifications to the Commlink.

I have also ordered the new hovi mic tip for the speakers and should be recieveing averything around the 2nd of december.

So what are your thoughts? I think I'm going to have so much fun answering calls while trooping XD

I was literally just about to order your comlink from Shapeways... Now I'm waiting until development for this awesome piece of gadgetry is complete! Nice work!

that is a nice setup you created, I like it very much.....

How hard would it be to make a Jedi comm I wonder. I've had the razor for it for some time, but back when I acquired it they had no BT devices yet , let along good cell phones

Im not sure if that razor can be split to add the electronics inside but I could model up the Jedi Com too.. Make it hollow and easy to open and close... ill work on it... I got confirmation that the mini speakers are on the way to me... hope those will give me more volume without having to use a preamp.

I remember there was a thread somewhere several years ago where someone showed a working Bluetooth headset inside a Jedi communicator. The Ladyshave is a hollow plastic shell but there is not that much room. You can make a screen-accurate working speaker grille by casting the pattern on the rubber insert and cutting crossing grooves on the back of the cast.

thanks, cant wait to get those new speakers... should be here an about a week or so.

Do you remember what Bluetooth device that was? also you might be able to find a amplifier for your speaker maybe just a watt or 2 i bet would make a difference on how loud it is.

My first failure.

The 3D printed kit I got didn't have the interior space I planned for. I shorted my powercell and the speaker is too large.

I have a smaller speaker on the way and am still shopping for a new powercell. The new parts I'm waiting on are built on the original Reade part. Assuming everything comes together and I don't blow the 1/2 watt speaker, I'm hoping to have a working model in a few months.
