Freeware Darth Vader Helmet

Wouldn't it be awesome if someone took a laser scan of an original Darth Vader helmet and converted it into a pepekura file so that anyone with a little elbow grease, a printer, paper, and a home depot fiberglass kit could construct an accurate Darth Vader helmet for free?:lol

What do you think?

Nice project. Never understood papercraft. Maybe because I simply don't have the patience for it, but I've seen several create awesome pieces from it.

This was made from my laser scans of the TM helmet, with permission from vadermania, to give a foundation to people who like to scratch-build their stuff. This is Dan's project and I'm looking forward to seeing more.

The work you've done with the scan has far surpassed any amount of effort on my part. Thanks so much.

I can just feel Vader uber-accuratists suddenly clutching their mouse in anger... all 3 of them.

I keed! I keed! They wouldn't care, seriously. :lol

Hey... I was only thinking in scaled projects... you and some others had the idea of using all that work to share with the masses in ways I hadn't thought of.

Who's the third?

Well the idea here is to make an accurate Vader helmet within the grasp of anyone who has the time and effort (even if not the cash):lol

There really aren't too many options for someone wanting to start of a budget Vader helmet besides undersized or warped castings.

Hopefully this project will create a base that people can invest their time and effort in and get some real payoff

Who's the third?

I'm sorry, I can't say. But, just know that there is a third one, on my word as a guy you have no reason to trust regardless of my credibility or knowledge on a prop replica forum where we don't have to actually communicate face 2 face. Value my opinion. :p

I keed! I keed! Sorry I couldn't help myself, too easy :lol

Yes, I personally know the third guy. He has connections to LucasFilm, but is under a NDA and cannot say how. He may or may not have held the original ANH Vader helmet(s) before it was converted during promotional work for TESB, and may or may not have detailed photos of the helmet mounting system with 3M tabs, and may or may not have swabbed the sweat of David Prowse from inside the helmet mouth mesh screens, and is now decoding the DNA of the "real" Darth Vader. He can neither confirm nor deny such rumors.

Oh, and he is also helping eFX with their ANH Vader Helmet.

Not to be too much of a wet blanket here but can we try to keep this thread as free as possible of Vader bickering.

Although I am a big fan of Vader props, I generally do not engage in a lot of threads on the subject because of all the negativity that goes on in the discussion.

But, this project is designed to break that up. Carsten and I have been working hard on this project so that we can give this material to the whole prop community so that anyone who wants a Vader helmet can make one of his own for free. This project is designed to be as positive as possible and do nothing but help everyone. So please try to stay positive here:$

That would be the first positive Vader thread so far LOL.

So whats the status on the project? Can we do something to help?

Im sure you know more then me on the Vader design, but I know a little and can help spot things needing work maybe? Let me know if so.

Cheers

need some help on it? Like a polyflow clean up :)
i'm doing it for free. Gotta give somewhat back don't I?
Great you scanned it!

It's coming.

It's a full helmet scan he's working with. Face mask and dome. Though, he's giving me more credit on this particular project than I deserve. I just provided the scan I had made for a different project. Dan is doing all the papercraft work.

Well before the thread gets locked, as most Vader threads do, I wanted to say Thank You to both of you for all the effort put into this project.

Rick

Thanks for the compliments guys. Anyone want to beta test this? I need someone to try to build this to see what works and what doesn't.

-best
