Fox Passes on American Torchwood Remake

I saw that blurb on the television screen while standing in line at the credit union today. I do hope Torchwood continues in some fashion. I think the Children of Earth miniseries was as good as any single season of Doctor Who since 2005. I don't think Fox would have been a good fit for the show anyway, especially in light of their history with fledgling science fiction shows.

I though Torchwood was a remake of Buffy ;)

Anyway it's a cool series and I hope it comes back in some caliber, IMO it's really sad that the BBC has a few new franchises that are showing strong potential in the outside UK market but they simply don't have the funds to keep them afloat...

I think that's a good thing. Next thing you know, they'll remake doctor who. :)

I have heard that torchwood will be back, but you never know with the brits. If there's one thing they are good at, it's quitting while they are ahead.

I read elsewhere that the Beeb are still shopping around other networks looking for a partner. So the series isn't yet dead in the water... yet.

THANK GOD.

Why the hell does there need to be an "American version"? Isn't the BBC version good enough?

Next up, the new, American, "Doctor Huh?"

From what I read the US Torchwood was less meant to be a 'reboot' more 'another branch'. Which, y'know, worked out ok for CSI, L&O... Stargate... :lol

MM is correct, the pilot was supposed to be a miniseries that would lead into both an american branch and a revival of the cardif branch

The reasons for most of these shows not crossing the pond is because the Brits are smart with their properties and for the most part they protect them from American studio treatment. I was called in years ago to write an American Doctor Who and I only went to one meeting after they gave me their approach. I had no interest in writing something I felt watered down both the character and his history. I knew the writer they hired a few weeks later, who did an outline based on the studio take, and (from what i understand) when the BBC read it they wouldn't give the rights over for it to be made. They kept final approval and I applaud them for that. I've also always liked the fact that they don't have millions of dollars to toss at their shows - it keeps their stuff character driven.

I dunno if this book documents what you were called in to write for but I've always liked the book 'The Nth Doctor' detailing a lot of the abandoned plans and attempts at relaunching Doctor Who over the years... It's on Google Books, and various print editions are available...

Interesting - I'll have to get that. I only came in for one meeting and I know some here would have lynched me if my name were on the movie they wanted to make. I don't remember all of it, but they wanted to Doctor fall in love only to have her killed by the Master then he would go back and rescue her but now she had no idea who he is. The Tardis could also shape shift into a car!!! :thumbsdown

Well that wouldn't be totally out of line as the TARDIS design is supposed to shape shift to it's surroundings to better blend in, but due to a glitch it was stuck in the police box form...

but they wanted to Doctor fall in love only to have her killed by the Master then he would go back and rescue her but now she had no idea who he is

Not a fan of this as it contradicts the idea that he can't change 'his' own time line, but based on Tennant's character that was struggling with a 'God' complex I don't find the story to out of line either...

Wow, that really does sound like an American movie version of Who. I'd like to see somebody make that as a joke.

Thank God. FOX would have probably mixed it with TEAM AMERICA, written Captain Jack out and replaced him with a talking trash can and then canceled the show 4 episodes in (out of 14 filmed) and replaced it with a crap reality show with a theme vaguely based on the original.

If the show is to be done right in the US we'd need HBO, Showtime or BBC A to handle it. FOX would have effed it up and ScyFy would neuter the soul out if while lobotomizing it into a drooling vegetative state.

I'd love to see a "Global Torchwood" maybe with Captain Jack traveling from country to country as a high end trouble shooter for them but only if it's handled by the right people with the right team. Maybe Joss Whedon and his team? At least then we'd know there would be hot, butt kicking women cast and killer smart dialog too.

We don't need an "American version" of the show. We already HAVE Doctor Who. Why would we need another one?
