Found prop piece!! (Joe Versus The Volcano)

So did we ever determine if it was the 7" or the 10" version of the hula girl statue?

I'm inclined to say it's the 10" based on this shot from the movie, since Tom Hanks is 6' tall and the lamp is almost the full height of his torso (about 24")

So it would be the 10" hula girl on a 3/4" base with a 10" tall lamp shade

Stumbled across this as well. It's an image from the 1920s called "Fairest Flower" and is (to me) clearly the reference used to create the ukulele girl on the lamp shade. It's just inverted.

Here it is flipped

Hi,

Really needing some help!

I bought the hula girl last year to make the lamp for a friends birthday. All the materials are easy enough to buy other than printing the lamp shade!!! I live in the UK and am really struggling to get this printed. First of all - the very few places that do digital printing only offer shades that are wider than they are tall. Secondly the couple of places I have spoken to have said the photo that was kindly provided on this forum is too low res?! But surely that can't be the case as so many of you have made one!

Any help or wild card ideas welcome on how I can make this shade. This has been on my to do list for a few years now and took me forever to get the hula girl second hand

Very big thanks in advance :)

I believe this is the current picture. The picture hasn't changed, but I changed what resolution it will tell them that it is.
They should accept it, now. They should stretch it to fit their shade.

Thanks, Robert! I love how it came out. So happy with finally finishing as well. The only thing to top it off would be a finial. The shade wasn't designed that way so maybe later I'll think of a hack to allow me to set the finial on top. Also, I think one of the most important things to do with creating this replica is to gloss varnish the lamp shade. Zazzle uses a cheap print method over the shade. It's easy to scratch off the color...very easy. Also, it's matt and makes the artwork look dull. A nice gloss varnish not only protects the artwork, it makes the colors much more saturated and the blacks look black, not gray...looks absolutely wonderful when varnished and gives the overall project the color pop that it needs.
Where did you get the pic for the shade? I wanted to make this for my boyfriend but I can’t find the pic

I created a version using some donated partial pics and my own photoshop skills, and then that was enhanced by an artist (name can be found in this thread) so that it looks more artistic and less Frankensteinish. The result is a unique piece of art not found anywhere else.

Hi! So My girlfriend surprised me on my birthday with the Hula girl and lamp shade so I can do my own build! I have most everything worked out but the lamp shade is amazing and it really needs to rotate. I've seen (Read this whole thread start to finish) where others figured out ways but I guess I need some help. I can't find the rotating superman toy lamp thing to use and on a video (not on this) I saw that someone used a disco ball thing . . . Help? I can't figure out how to get it all to work with the lamp insides. Can someone who got it to work take a picture of the insides of the shade showing the motor and how they got it all to work? Thanks in advance!

Was just talking about this last night. Always nice to see this thread bumped!

Get the motor first, and if it simply has a pole sticking straight up, then you need to extend that and attach it to the ring in the middle of the lamp shade you purchased. The whole rod and shade will spin when the motor turns.

I haven't actually made one for myself.

Every time someone makes a lamp with my designs, it just makes me smile and be Happy. It's more fun seeing how other people make their lamps than if I was making the lamps and selling them. :D:cool
How do I got about getting one of these amazing lamp shades?

I just came across this post.. I'm so excited to try to make this lamp but Zazzle removed this item. Darn. Would you share your art file for this?
About 8 posts back. You can see the small picture, and then when you click you can see the whole picture and right click to download it.

Hi guys - I'm new to this thread. Hoping to help my husband make this lamp for my birthday. No one else has mentioned anything about the rippling effect that the light gives out when it's turning. I can't help but wonder if there could be a secondary shade, rotating in the opposite direction inside? I'm going to try and track down some of the set designers from the film in the meantime. any thoughts?

I just watched it again. I think that the shade may be more like rice paper than the Zazzle shade we're using. And so, being more translucent, you are seeing through this side of the shade (say the beach side), and seeing the opposite side of the shade (the volcano) through this side. Subtly.

Re: Found prop piece!!

Wow, almost 3 years to the day since I made my first post about finding this hula girl statue! And what better way to celebrate this almost-3-year anniversary than to receive in the mail my copy of the original lampshade!! Yes, shortly after making my original post, I was able to track down and make contact with the owner of the original lampshade and the original painting used to produce the shade! I contacted him and he was awesome. He sent great pictures of the lamp shade from all angles and of the painting. He also said that a few friends had recently asked him about the lamp shade as well, so he decided to make a few full copies of the entire lamp, including the hula girl base! We went back and forth through emails over the past few years, and finally this year he got around to actually working on them. And just today, I received this beauty.

Before anyone asks, I'm trying to get permission from the owner to post the full pictures of the original that he sent to me. I'm working on it.

This isn't the finished lamp, but this gives an idea of what it'll look like when I receive the hula girl base. I'll still need to add in the motion lamp capabilities, music, and the round, cloudy white plastic cover to the lamp that can be seen when Joe points the lamp at Mr. Waturi.

Now I just need to track down Tom Hanks to get him to sign the replica and I can officially tell my loved ones to bury me with this lamp when I die!

Any chance you ever got authority to post more pictures of the lamp shade or where/how to recreate more? Been trying to build one for years. Have the hula girl and pole assembly and top, but still searching on how to make the lampshade. Any help would be appreciated!

Four posts up, #152. Is the LINK to make your lampshade. It says (in gray which indicates a LINK) Lamp Shade. That post references the PICTURE to download from here, and then upload to Zazzle. Follow the instructions.

Is anyone here selling the lamp or has anyone found it sold anywhere?

These are basically a labor of Love. It is actually costly to make this. I don't know what is the current value, but in the hundreds of dollars to make, and therefore even higher to sell.

I've been designing a basement tiki bar and was wanting to include a nod to JvV that wasn't too obvious to the average person. I settled on the lamp, jumped on here and read through the entire thread several times. I love all the previous builds, learned a lot, and here's my first attempt...
Thanks to all the trailblazers who contributed the art, music and information!

Here is a Google Drive Link to the resources I used. The spinning bulb might be hard to find now. During Christmas they will have similar items, but the one I used was white only. Good luck on your own!
I can see from your photos how you mounted the motor atop the bulb, but I can't tell how you powered the motor? And what is the disc between them?
