I wonder what the legalities of that would be, would Lucasfilm have a claim to it if the story is true and the extra walked off the set with it.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I don't know if it would still be considered their property or not. Cool if real though!

Those blaster were definitely used by the Hoth rebel forces....no doubt about that
