Foam Sculpting My First Bio - Beyond The Final Rung

Are you just gonna do a box mold for the small parts?  90% of the stuff I do is molded that way, and I haven't had any real problems yet.  Are you planning on molding with the same silicone your using for the bio mold?  Just curious  :p

Yes to both questions. Glad to here you have not had any major problems doing molds this way. Much will depend perhaps on how I position the mold to pour the resin.

Steve

I poured mine very slowly in a thin stream from about 12" up or so, into one corner of the mold.  I used the Monster Makers Mold 125, which is a shore A20 tin based silicone.  The viscosity was great, and it gassed out with no problems.  For my dread molds I used the Mold Star 30 (platinum) stuff from smooth-on, and also had no problems.  Of course, the dreads are smooth so I didn't have to worry about fine details or undercuts.  After about 200 dread beads the Monster Makers silicone is just about worn out.  Next time around I'll go with the Mold Max 30, as it seems to last longer than the A20.

Brian

Brian, thanks for the reminder about pouring from higher up.

I got the molds for the interior detail pieces ready for silicone over the weekend so thay are sitting now along with the helemt mold waiting for my silicone to come in . The silicone should be here tomorrow.

A couple light coats of clear acrylic laquer and they are ready to go. I will add a few acorn nuts for registration keys tonight.

I'm glad you are doing progress shots on this. I have been wondering how to do those "box molds".
Hey Ricky, I hope they are helpful.

Here are some progress shots now that I have more silicone. I got another layer of silicone on the helmet mold and poured the two interior detail piece box molds last night. This morning I removed the box mold sides and cut the clay loose from the base boards with a piece of fishing line. Now I have to carefully clean the clay from the molds without removing all the pieces. It will be a bit tedious I am sure. I still have at least one or possibly two layers of silicone to add to the helmet before I can do the mother mold for the inside. My plan is to have the helmet mold finished by this weekend to the point I could attempt my first pour. We shall see....getting close.

The anticipation is corrosive to my mental health, Steve.

I'm going to go lock myself in a dark room and weep until all is finished. That way, when I see it come to light, I will have all the emotional distress cast aside and will be able to embrace the joy of something beautiful again.

Mommy!

Hey Brian, yes I am getting close and it is causing me to hurry myself along so don't worry, I will have it soon.

Hold it together Ricky, don't fall apart on me now. :p

Things are looking very good.
Thanks Jeff. I am still blown away by the pictures of your helmet mold. Thanks for sharing those.

OK, on to the update...I cleaned the clay off of the back side of the block molds and everything looked good. I gave them a light scrubbing with a tootbrush and a little acetone to remove the stubborn clay bits and this is what I had...

Then I hot glued the side forms back in place and sprayed them with a couple light coats of MaaN Ease Release 200 and they were ready to pour.

Silicone poured.

This morning I removed the side forms and split the molds and viola!

It looks like they came out quite well. I did not notice any significant problems/defects. I still need to do some trimming to clean them up but the block molds are basically done and I am quite pleased with the outcome so far. Not bad for a rookie. :D

I also applied another layer of silicone to the helmet mold and it looks to me like it may be about ready for the mother mold. I do not see any significant undercuts but I may add another layer of silicone just to thicken it up a bit more. Working with these Smooth On products has become much easier and is quite a joy I must say.

I am so anxious to get this done. They are calling for snow today in the Asheville area so maybe I will get to go home early so I can get an earlier start on it. That would be SWEET!!!

Stay tuned....

Ha! Yes you are that close....we will work something out.

Steve

Hey Steve, it has been awhile since i was here last. You sir are going off on this bio! Your molding job is one of the cleaner ones i've seen. You are inspiring me to get back creating Pred stuff. Really nice job! You ready for the snow tonight? I know I am!

Hey Sean...good to hear from you. Thanks for the kind words. I am having a blast making this thing I guess because it is something I love to do. You should get back to working on pred stuff if you haven't been. Just because you won the Asheville halloween contest doesn't mean you need to stop man... :p It is 9:00 as I type this and still no snow....bummer! It is just not cold enough. Ahh...so it goes with the weather here in the mountains. Often very unpredictable.

Thanks a million Clay. I appreciate the compliments as always.

I just keep pluggin' along so here is another update...I got the block molds all cleaned up last night so they are ready to pour and I am excited about that. I also got another (and final) layer of silicone on the helmet mold. It is good and thick now so I believe it is ready to proceed to the mother mold.

This morning the silicone was set so I went ahead and trimmed the flange edge and cut the registration keys before coming into work. You should be able to make them out in the pics.

Tonight is "date night" so I won't get anything more done on it until Saturday when I hope to complete the mother mold. I will have plenty to update then.
