Foam Sculpting My First Bio - Beyond The Final Rung

Yeah, I believe that the inside of the bio is the respirator or breathing equipment for the predator a bit like the p2 external respirator, this one is built into the bio .... But that is just my speculation and pretty sure that I read that once upon a time

This just keeps getting better and better! Awesome work man,

Thanks again HH...much appreciated as always.

[sub]It really is quite the piece. Is it just me or can you almost make out the facial features of a Predator in the inside "electronics" of the helmet in the second picture you posted. It almost looks like a mirror image. I am really stoked about it.[/sub]

XPredX, yes it does somewhat resemble the mandile features of a predator's face...interesting observation there.

Nice to know that...I like it! The center piece looks like something it would bite onto perhaps, much like a scuba diver would hold onto a regulator in their mouth when diving. It is better seen in post #127. On my work up here the piece is held in place with a screw and pivots forward and back a little bit. I am trying to figure how it could possibly be incorporated with a switch for activating the lasers if possible. This would only potentially benefit a half mask wearer provided the helmet could even fit with all the garb inside it. It is still just a thought at this time though.

Okay, you need to hurry up and finish this Steve. I can no longer wait...I HAVE TO HAVE ONE!!! I can't believe this is your first bio build. That just blows my mind. It would be awesome if you could work out a way to use the center piece as a switch for the lasers. As long as your putting all this effort in this, you may as well do the eye flash too (y) . Keep up the good work buddy!

My friend-- this is what it is all about --innovation and getting out of the conventional box. This is great !.. Awesome job.

Patience my friend...patience. :D I am glad you like it Brian.

Thank you very much Clay! I appreciate the complement from someone as inovative as you.

I was able to make some good progress over the weekend. I picked up a few materials I needed to be able to complete the lenses (I hope my plan works out) so those are next on my agenda. In the meantime I finished the impovised laser shroud interior cover, the lower left cheek interior port (totally made up by me) and the leather looking pieces inside the helmet (actually imitation leather vinyl, not the color I would desire but not bad for a remnant) and all in all it has turned out pretty decent. I still need to iron out a few details like how to ultimately secure the parts inside the helmet (right now they are just held in place with carpet tape) and where and how to mount the switches. There are a few things I may end up doing a bit diferently but the inside detail is basically done. Getting closer...

Damn Steve, your killing me over here! I used fake leather too, and came up with some good ways to wear/weather it if your interested. I love this thing dude! ! !

Man this thing just gets better and better! You have captured so much detail in there

Thanks HH! It is coming along nicely...

I am with Double H on this one. This is just brilliant.

Much appreciated XPredX...I am anxious to get on to the molding phase...hopefully soon.

Wow, just wow! I have never seen such detail on the inside of bio. Great work, you should be super proud.

Hey hannay07, I like how it is turning out...I wish I had something better to gauge it on concerning wearability with the detail inside but at least it should look good for display if nothing else..

Brian, yes I would like to know what you did to make the fake leather look more worn or natural. It is not my first choice for color but what I could get from a remnant table for cheap. The stuff is relatively thin and flexible so it works well for what I am doing and the color variations provide for a wide range of possibilities...I also got a piece of genuine thin leather but it would be more work to install.

I somehow missed this thread until just now. Very freaking cool

Thanks Brandon! I have been enjoying your threads and seeing your "trial and error" efforts coming together very well. You have lots of good ideas...

From what I can see, it almost looks like the same vinyl I got. I picked mine up at Hobby Lobby. We have a Tandy leather here in town, but in order to get the size I needed, the wanted to sell me half a freakin' cow hide lol. Mine is super thin, and quite stretchy as well. I started off by scuffing it lightly in different directions with 400 grit sand paper. In certain spots, I used a little more pressure to get some heavier wear, but be careful here...it rips easy. Once I scuffed it up to my liking, I took some fine steel wool and "buffed" it a little, just enough to take off that tacky shine. I also went around all the edges with a lighter to make the edges look more worn, and burn off the black felt that was on the back. I also rubbed some dirt and ashes over it. Not sure if the later did much, but I was just having fun :) . The last thing I did was mist it very lightly with flat black sprat paint. You could use black shoe polish instead of spray paint, but go sparingly. I picked a few spots and sprayed a little heavier coat, and rubbed it off immediately. Over all I think it turned out good, and I was actually accused of cutting up my grandfathers old bomber jacket, so apparently it looks like old, worn leather. The pic doesn't really do a good job comparing the two, but you can get the idea (the weathered piece is on the right). Hope this helps bud!

Thanks for the info. Brian, I will definitely give your suggestions a try. There is a much improved difference with the piece on the right. It definitely looks more realistic...while I would desire to ultimately use genuine leather it would take a lot of work on the piece I picked up to get it to fit right and it is not as uniform so I will continue to experiment with the imitation stuff for now, with your weathering effects of course.

holy hell. awesome job bro looks sick.

Hello jasonx, thanks. I appreciate it.

I did start to play with making the lenses last night and learned some things. I learned that Lexan is harder to work with than I thought it would be (even 0.030" thick sheet is very stiff, it takes more heat to shape than I thought it would take and it readily sticks to foil when flexible enough to shape which leaves marks on it) and that I need a little less reflective material in front of the mesh as you can hardly see the mesh even in the best situations (see photo below). Soooo, I have picked up an alternate material to try and I am going to attempt working with the Lexan in a little different way. I will report on my results as I go but for now I need a slightly different game plan. I want to be able to use the Lexan because it is so strong but I may need a thinner sheet. For now I will focus on changing my processing method.

Hey BonzRus, as I said before your project is looking great. In the past I have used packaging plastic for the lenses, as in the clear sheats that are vacuum formed around a lot of items you by at most stores. It's free and it works great. Just the right thickness. Just a suggestion.

this is wha t

t I mean-- take it to the next level and raise the bar.--doing the INSIDE details of the Bio is rocking-- should get a lot of good juices flowing for people here.

Thanks alphatech686! I have thought of that as well and it is certainly an option I am considering. I have acquired some 0.015" sheet plastic (not Lexan) and some 0.020" Lexan to play with. I may look into vacuum forming them as a possibility...we shall see. I also have picked up a honeycombed silicone trivet like thing that I am going to try to heat the Lexan on in the hopes it won't stick prior to forming it. If I can get the shape right to fit the lense sockets without marks I will be OK. I also picked up a slightly lighter mirrored film to try on the front piece...I am still mulling over the results of the first material but it looks just a little too reflective to me personally.

Thank you Clay. My desire is to create a show piece as much as a functional piece so it seemed to make the most sense (at least to me) to go the direction I have taken it. I love doing stuff like this and Lord willing, I will be able to complete it to the glory of the one how gave me the talents to do this sort of thing in the first place.

Whoa! Unbelievable!

I haven't been on the forums lately (just taking a bit of a break) and when I come back...I see many a new topics and this progress.

Dude, you are killing it with this bio. Absolutely stunning work brother. Keep at it so you can do more in the future. : )
