Foam Sculpting My First Bio - Beyond The Final Rung

Ok, so where do I sign for of these? Hypnotism clearly had no effect

Awesome work bud, those lenses are kick ass. Have you considered making some and selling a couple?

Thanks Jason, I tell you what, you tele-port yourself over here and I will give you one for free. It would be worth a bio just to see that...

As for the lenses, if I can get the quality to where I would like it to be I would consider it...

How many WOW's can i fit on this page before i piss the moderators off? lol. Anyway times that one by.... well alot. Great work mate. Very smooth. Like that you added the slits next to the eyes as well (did notice them missing before but really didn't want to say anything because there is no way i can do any better haha) :p Looks awesome mate. Every update pic is an eye opener i can tell you.

Thanks Mike! It is getting smoother with every...single...coat of primer...I wet sand out... o_O I am starting to get a twitch... :D Or maybe my twitch has always been there and this is just making it more pronounced. Ha!

Dude...you nailed the entire process of making a foam bio...I highly doubt you could mess up the sculpting process! I have faith in you.

Jason, thanks for the vote of confidence...I am humbled.

Steve

Okey dokey get that bio ready I'm on my way

Hahah got all the way there and found a note on the front door saying do not disturb lol that and i got stopped at customs. I bet you haven't been home to check your bio is still there muhahahaha

WHAT!?!...(dialing home number)...Hello, QUICK...go down to the basement and tell me if my bio is still on my work bench....QUICKLY!!!! :p

That's a recast I have the original in my HANDS muhahahaha lol

Ok joking aside, this is one kick ass Steve , kudos to you bud

That would explain my £30 charge for foam, had a hard time convincing them that the bio was actually made from foam, they looked at me like I was mad! I said you wouldn't believe the materials people can an have used to make these to make things.

In saying that neither can I, I still stand astounded that this bio was made from foam!

How have i overlooked this whole damn thread? i have not been as active over the last 3 months but daaaayum.

projects like this are a huge part of WHY i love this place, boundries are always being psuhed, limits are always being broken, new ideas are born and raised.

this place and threads like this make me realise WHY i love this place and WHY i come here on a daily basis.

my apologies for not seeing this sooner.

Great Great thread, with a equally Great peice produced.

I am lovin' the exchange here guys. Thanks for the banter...it keeps it entertaining and fun. I enjoyed spending a few minutes in chat with you the other day Jason and Brian. Thanks.

Thanks for the comments Lee and no need to apologize. In all honesty I don't know how you do it all... work, create your master pieces, live life and moderate the Lair. That is a lot and it would be very difficult for you to stay on top of every thread that got created to boot. No worries. I keep marvelling at the P1 mask you have created for vampscorpion. Simply stunning....

Ahhh....I love the smell of primer in the morning....It smells like progress! Just a few shots in its Winter (white primer) phase...the different colors of primer sure are helping to bring out the places that need more attention still.

That is simply amazing! I love to see a fellow perfectionist putting in as much blood, sweat and tears in order to getting it just right. What an exceptional job on creating this piece.

Thanks XPredX...it is not perfect and never will be but I still have more to do. It is not quite where I want it to be before making the molds. Sometimes my drive to get it "just right" can be a problem so I have to check myself and at some point I will have to say "it is as good as it is gonna get" and move on.

Steve

Haha nope I made the mother mould and returned the original to you. You ain't the only one with quick hands are ya?! Lol

Looking awesome dude now get so paint a pumping on that thing!

Every time I pop in the lair, this is the first thing I check for updates. I'm in love with this bio Steve. Your hard work is paying off, and will make this one a "must have" for many collectors (but me first!). Do you think it will be molded by the first of the year? I know that the holidays are gonna slow me down, and with 8 kids I'm sure you'll have plenty of other things going on. The wait for this is driving me crazy, but it's been worth it the whole time!

Brian

Thanks guys. Yes Brian, I am hoping to get the molds made by the first part of the year...give or take. Just to let you know my Christmas wish list contains nothing but the Smooth On things I will need to make the molds. Unfortunately it is more $$ than what is currently budgeted for my Christmas presents so I am trying to be creative with how to make this possibly happen. Hey at least all my bills are paid and I am in good health. If I can swing this I could possibly have the molds made somtime shortly after the first of the year and start gearing up for casting some up shortly thereafter. Depending on how the Fiscal Cliff thing goes it could impact how quickly I can have castings. I have come to enjoy those child tax credits if you catch my drift. ;)

Steve

Two things for certain... Death and Taxes.

One, a natural event that all living beings must succumb to. The other... a man made pain in the ass... that is supposed to fund things for the better but just seems to make things a little harder for us "worker ants". Ergh!

Beside that though... this Bio is coming along very beautifully Steve, I like it!!! (y)

Thanks REYALS, I am getting closer to getting this one finished. Almost ready to start making molds.

I made another set of lenses as an experiment...been doing a lot of experimenting on lenses lately. Anyway, here are a couple more pics of the latest look compared to some previous sets.

First set...foam tape gasket, Platinum film front, Smoked film rear.

Second set...Platinum film front and rear, carpet tape gasket.

Latest set...I changed the Platinum film to the Privacy Mirror film on the rear lense for these. The difference is sublte but you get less show through of the carpet tape and mesh on the inside.

View through the lenses...

1118122048a.jpg

The heart of my lense system...this gets sandwiched between the front and rear lense pieces.

1118122138.jpg

View from the front. It still has the appearance I am looking for even though I have not used the smoke tinted film for the rear lense.

1118122049.jpg

1118122049a.jpg

The front and rear lenses are made of 0.020" Lexan and the inner lense system is clear Styrene (Shrinky Dink) plastic. The carpet tape (about three layers) works much better than the foam tape.

I still have to figure out how to address the film not wanting to adhere very well to the Lexan but this is close to what I am trying to achieve.

I had the same problem trying to get the film to stick to any plastic I tried. I finally gave up on it and went with straight mesh. I've searched for any type of spray on stuff that would do the same thing but haven't found anything yet. I may just bite the bullet and order me a motorcycle helmet lens. Nice progress Steve, lookin' good!
