First Sculpt Attempt Ever For Suit Mask

Hey guys!

I just joined the forum becuase i have always wanted to make a predator suit and i had no idea everyone else loves this stuff like i do!! Woohoo haha, So anyway, yesterday i went out and bought some clay and made a foam base that comes apart in segments so i can work on the rear of the head. Hopefully i can use this to make a mould to make my mask!

Constructive crittisizm welcome! It's far from finished, And keep in mind this is about 3 Hours work and the first time i've ever tried sculpting. Thanks for reading!

Generally, I'd recommend bringing the crown back quite a bit, add some bulk too. If you have(or get) a figure for reference that will help. I think you did a really good job in the face area.

When your sculpting the details will come later. The big shapes should come first and then to the smaller ones. It' save you some angst later when your not removing all of your detail.

Excellent! Im after this kind of advise, When you say the crown, you mean the frill shape behind the skull? ( not sure which part is which ) And can you be a little more specific on the "bulk" you mean? Im going to be adding horns around the skull edges and on the jaw and sides of the face like along the eye ridges etc.

I really need all the help i can get! Thankyou for the input!

Yes, the frill is what I'm calling the crown. The back of the head tends to have a lot more mass there then some people realize.
If you look at the proportions, the face is about(or less) %50 of the visible area on the front of a Pred's head.


EXAMPLE: (I'm not claiming to be an expert in comparative Predator anatomy either)
say you want a P1 styling, the head will be more pulled back and domed. (see P1 references) P2 is flatter but also drawn back. (see P2)

It really depends on the direction you want to go. Customs are great because you can pick and choose and make up what you want to get what your after. If it were me, I tend toward the P2 and I'd bring the back of the head and the dome back further.

You've got the feeling there in your sculpture and this really is a great start.

I have destroyed the old model and made a new one, Made the head longer and changed to more of a P2 style, I have finished the shape and started adding some large retail, also put some foam balls in for eyes for the time being to enable me to do the eye detail,

My mAIN problem is that i am using Water based Clay and its very hard to work and keep at the right moisture level, I can't seam to find affordable oil based clay in australia, We have ONE supplier of monster clay in AUS and they charge $50 per 5 lbs + $35 postage per 5 lbs.. Making it $85 per 5lbs.. RIP OFF

Question: Does anyone know a cheaper option to buy for modeling than Monster clay?

Hey looks cool i would add some extra to the brow i love it when they are looking like they have a scowl on thier face. I noticed it has a drastic change from the first pics i was wondering what made you change from the tubular look to this ? Don't get me wrong i like them both just wondering what changed keep it up i am working on mine as well i will keep it posted in progress. Have you ever ordered clay from the us? i would reccomend monstermakers.com i have another place but they are about the same in price. It is called (special effects supply company ) they are located in UTAH in the united states you might check there they offer 3 different kinds from soft to hard hope this helps.

Hey mate! Thanks for the advise I havent ordered from the US before The postage to Aus is just too much.. BUT!! i found a supplier 5 minutes from my house hidden in this little industrial area with no website who specialise in Sculpture and modeling supplies! i got some Really high quality Oil-based clay from them, i got 10KG's ( 22Lbs ) For $80 and i think i need about 40 LBS for a mask.. ( i have a big F(&*%^ Head .. lol..

I Changed the look because i know the shape better, As this is my first attempt at modeling anything i need the practice anyway.. I'll finish this one off in Water based clay and then build the next one with the good quality Clay.

Here are a few updates, it's changed again and im finally happy with how this shape is comming along! I havent put the inner frill around the cranium yet but it's comming

Thats awesome about the clay. You need to fill the inside of the head with something other than clay so you dont have to use as much clay. Also you need to use the shape of your head, keep in mind the direction of the head and mask you need the head more vertical with the neck other wise its not going to work.I liked the first 2 moldings you had, its looking more elongated now thats if you want to stick to the traditional predator style of face. just hang in there and try to use other pictures to determine how wide and structured the faces are.

Hehe i know what you mean about the head shape being mor verticle.. but mate, I have a HUGE head.. Lol And nearly no neck...SO it wouldnt work being more verticle as my neck isnt long anough and it would look weird and i coulnt see out the eyes

INside that mask is a Custom made Mannequinn head exactly the size of my head and neck so i'll fit in there no worries!

Its much bigger than it looks.. I think it might even be too big.. I dunno.. but im using this one as a practice one i think and then making a new Copy with the Oil-based clay.. I dunno..

Your planning on a hydrocal(stone) mold, for a latex mask?
If so, keep in mind that bigger is good with latex because of the shrinkage. With Predator stuff, I think it's better to be a little big then a little small anyway. Until your used to the shinking, your guessing.

OH YES i would make it bigger anyway because you are going to have to cut a slit down the back to get your head into it trust me /us you are not going to like trying to stuff your head through that hole i promise you besides then you can trimm it down . I punched holes in the back of mine and laced it together for a nice smooth look . I even went a little farther and had a shoe repairman put eyelets in so it would not pull on the latex over time.

What i was trying to explain to you about the head was this keep in mind when wearing these masks you have alot of weight in the back because of the dreads and other stuff on them it pulls your neck back and over 5-10 minutes your neck will start to stain badly and if your planning on wearing this for a long period. your neck is going to be killing you . thats why most of the wearable masks are more vertical than horizontal . just thought you might want that info before you get too deep.
