First official image of Obi-Wan from D+ (props/costumes discussion only)

They used a MR for Yoda’s because in that case it fit production needs. It was one scene, basically a hero shot. It didn’t require any stunt work, it wasn’t being used anywhere else. That’s a case where grabbing something off the shelf worked— it was a one off need. All the other sabers are used extensively and required different needs (stunt work, hero work, stand in work, etc):
Maybe the initial prop was Master Replicas based, with copies then made of it? I have to admit I doubt it would make a good "hero" prop, and I can't imagine someone would want to weather one. Since it isn't something you can just buy a new one of. But I could totally see it being scanned or something, for copies being made. I don't believe any of ROTS Obi-Wan "hero" sabers are in the archives. So if one of the prop guys owned one, or if one was kept in the archives, it would certainly have been used, as reference at minimum.

When I say off the shelf, I mean they could have nabbed it off eBay, it could have belonged to somebody on the team, they could have some calls to somebody sitting on back stock. Mostly I’m just throwing out that prop teams are always low on time and money. Production needs often dictate, even for hero shots, that they do scratch builds to fit their needs, while still trying to adhere to canon. In this case, the Yoda saber just had to be seen in a few wide shots. Doing just blade ignition is easy in post. So if time is a factor, in this case it made sense to go with an already built model with a bit of aging added to make it unique.

I guess, as well, what got me thinking about Master Replicas, is because Halliwax pretty confidently identified Yoda's saber in The Book of Boba Fett as a Master Replicas. So possibly a slight precedent?

I've also talking with guy on Facebook. He says he's on here. And he's okayed me to mention it.(Don't want to cause any trouble, or get anyone in trouble!) He says he's seen the prop. And that it is a Master Replicas with a Roman Props balance pipe.

Undoubtedly, making a new lightsaber to sell has something to do with it. I mean Hasbro already had a new Obi-Wan saber. Though they package things however they want. Heck, I have one of those old Force Action spring loaded lightsabers. It's a TPM/AOTC style, but the packaging has ROTS Obi-Wan on it.

On a slight tangent. I wonder if they have any Obi-Wan "hero" props still around? The one that was always used for all the reference books and such, is that one with the brown neck that just recently got auctioned.
As far as the yoda saber goes seth beat me to it. I can't confirm it was a mr either. Nor can i confirm the obi. I suppose i could call the propmaster and ask some questions and see what i can say on here.

Oh that would be really cool! You wouldn't get in trouble for that? Don't want to happen. It would be cool to get some confirmation. Like I say a gentleman I was talking to said, he's seen the prop. But of course things could have changed they weren't aware of.

Star Wars Identities exhibit has one of the ROTS Obi-Wan sabers on tour, I'm sure if they didn't have access to the archives they could have had reference pictures and measurements taken from that one. This project has been in production for a long time so I don't get why they wouldn't have access to the ILM scans and be able to get access to the archives.

My question is will the Hasbro black series fx saber be made from scan data of this new saber, because you know they have been working on one.

There is no reason they cant get or make what they want. They have all the archive info for everything. I don't know why thats a question. They built jabas throne room in exact detail down to some of the more prominent cracks for book of fett.

The Identities exhibit looks to use the "brown neck" saber. Or one of them. One was auctioned.

Then another has been used in all the reference books. I think this one is in nicer condition.
The prop that Master Replicas was given to replicate had a glossy copper neck, as opposed to brown. As far as I know, it's the only saber to have that coloration. I believe it was promotional saber.

From the pictures we've seen. It looks like a glossy copper neck. So it's either based on that prop, based on a Master Replicas, or is a Master Replicas.

EDIT

If you couldn't tell I've been obsessing over the ROTS Obi-Wan lightsaber in the last couple of years. :p

They own lucas films ltd. I believe they have full access to everything. Correct me if im wrong. That means they can get whatever they want.

I know almost nothing about lightsabres, and to be honest care even less - but my understanding was that Disney did not, in fact, have access to Lucasfilm's props, only the IP. Certainly the reason put forward as to why all the astrodroids in the Disney movies are new builds (and for background droids, frequently rented from Astromech Club builders) is that Disney couldn't have the old R2-D2 props.

That story could be wrong, of course, or I could be mis-remembering, or it could be that Disney can go look at all the old props and drawing and so forth but isn't allowed to actually film the old props. But yeah, my understanding is that Disney doesn't actually have all the old LFL props and thus has to build new ones.

Anyone with further info on this subject, I'd love to hear it!

Speaking of lightsabers in the upcoming Obi-Wan series on Disney+, how cool would it be to see the crate that holds the Skywalker (Graflex) saber as an Easter Egg in the background of a scene? Or - even better - how cool would it be to see Obi-Wan actually use that Skywalker saber if he needs an extra saber sometime? Talk about fan service.

And doesn’t he also have Qui-Gon’s saber tucked away somewhere?

In the pre-Disney canon, yes. I don't believe it's mentioned again after Obi-Wan constructs the lightsaber seen in EP2. It's the main lightsaber he uses in the novel Rogue Planet, and Anakin briefly uses it, but after that, it only shows up in visions or flashbacks. I don't remember if it's explicitly stated that Obi-Wan stored it away, though. In the Disney canon, Qui-Gon's lightsaber is returned to the Jedi Temple to become part of a memorial.

I always forget that all the facts that I used to know are now wrong

But what will it look like! "Skinny-flex"? Another Graflex variant? A mix of the two?
