First official image of Obi-Wan from D+ (props/costumes discussion only)

The frag set just below the top ring on the grenade does not appear to look like the EP3 saber or replicas based on the EP3 saber. It looks just a little off in the cuts, at least from that photo. It looks like a newly created saber to me, not a version currently available.

Weirdly, I kinda see the very streamlined and idealized TCSS versions of the grenade and booster. I know it’s not, but they have that feel.

I personally would have preferred they just gone with a real-parts or Roman’s for the hero and scanned it to build stunts from.

Its what they should have done

Yeah, at first I was thinking a Master Replicas. But those grooves look a bit more pointy. This new one they look a little bit more rounded.

I think it's just the result of sanding off the powder coating

Sorry duplicative. But I’ll leave it anyway.

So maybe a Master Replicas with a balance pipe? Or at least a Master Replicas copy. I can't imagine they'd weather a Master Replicas.

I like all the little wobbles and a symmetry they added to the emitter section.

So the OG ROTS saber was made from scratch, the MR saber was made from in hand measurements of an original ROTS? Roman made his from MR measurements? either way if they all use the same specs wouldn't that make them all very close and hard to tell the difference from to the untrained eye?

I keep telling you guys they build everything in house. In house. Im there. I see it
That's why I thinking they didn't use a Master Replicas. I mean there's no way, they go chop up one. But I wouldn't be surprised if someone had one kicking around, that and the pictures of it are easy enough to find.

They own lucas films ltd. I believe they have full access to everything. Correct me if im wrong. That means they can get whatever they want. So why didn't they use a master replicas. Cause merchandising. They know that if they put out a new saber everyone will buy it. Cha ching! In my opinion they bought starwars for the merchandising. Lucas built ILM off the money he made from slapping SW on lunch boxes and bedsheets etc. It was worth way more than the movies alone. He was brilliant in that aspect. And thats what Disney wanted. Thats a whole different conversation though. As far as this saber goes, we will see it pretty soon. I wouldn't be surprised if it looked like the rots saber. It makes sense for the shows time line. They have an amazing crew of propmakers that build everything. We wouldn't have this job if they just pulled everything out of the vault or bought it off ebay. We build everything on these shows. I've done 4 of them. Same formula every time.

I guess, as well, what got me thinking about Master Replicas, is because Halliwax pretty confidently identified Yoda's saber in The Book of Boba Fett as a Master Replicas. So possibly a slight precedent?

I've also talking with guy on Facebook. He says he's on here. And he's okayed me to mention it.(Don't want to cause any trouble, or get anyone in trouble!) He says he's seen the prop. And that it is a Master Replicas with a Roman Props balance pipe.

Undoubtedly, making a new lightsaber to sell has something to do with it. I mean Hasbro already had a new Obi-Wan saber. Though they package things however they want. Heck, I have one of those old Force Action spring loaded lightsabers. It's a TPM/AOTC style, but the packaging has ROTS Obi-Wan on it.

On a slight tangent. I wonder if they have any Obi-Wan "hero" props still around? The one that was always used for all the reference books and such, is that one with the brown neck that just recently got auctioned.

There are 2 reasons I hope they didn’t use a Master Replicas Obi-Wan ROTS. First, it weighs a TON. Second, the secondary-market prices for the MR OB1 ROTS are going to skyrocket and they were already sky-high. People are going to be paying thousands of dollars to take apart the MR saber and there are already a limited number of MR OB1 ROTS sabers out there.

Didn’t Efx make a cast resin version molded from the MR?

They used a MR for Yoda’s because in that case it fit production needs. It was one scene, basically a hero shot. It didn’t require any stunt work, it wasn’t being used anywhere else. That’s a case where grabbing something off the shelf worked— it was a one off need. All the other sabers are used extensively and required different needs (stunt work, hero work, stand in work, etc):
