First Contact Phaser rifle

Hey all.
I was given this by a friend when he was clearing out his house.
When I got it, it was painted silver and black, he had installed the light and sould electronics from the playmates first contact hand phaser it it, and the reason why he gave it to me: The barrel had split and broken off the body underneath the "scope" just forward of its mount.

Using Araldyte, I have managed to repair that break, adding some 5mm steel rod for strength.

I'm now in the process of filling in gaps and smoothing out some of the surfaces that have been damaged by storage and use.

I sacrificed the bulb at the tip of the barrel which had been wired into the light and sound board, there was no way to remove the broken off barrel for cleaning and re-attaching without riping the wires out.

Here are some pics of the rifle as it is right now.
Anyone know he made this kit? Are parts still available?

This is a close up of the repair zone. That hand reast was originaly a handle on a hinge so it could be extended downward. I decided to glue it in position to add some structural integrity. So I filled in the gaps and I am currently working on it to make it look right.

The red line indicates where it broke off. The green line indicates where the steel re-enforcing rod is (both sides)

The butt was full of gaps. All filled in and smoothed. Still need to clean up the edges now that I'm done with the gaps.

Nice rifle, always wanted one of these.

I dunno who made it, but I'm looking forward to more progress!

Beautiful prop, even in its current state. I always liked the design on these. Good luck with the finishing!

Cheers folks. Just finished filling in more gaps. Should have this finished in time for a display in November.

That is so funny! I'm one of the crew that made these for the movie and as far as I know, there is no kit, your probably holding one of the pulls from the actual molds. Everything was done so fast (like everything on Trek) that we didn't make things perfect back then, it was rather crazy at times. The break point is near where there was a break point in the gun itself. The original was made up of 5 or 6 parts? the barrel is one, the body another, the scope another, and I think the but may have been, it's been so long, hard to remember. There was also a seat belt for the carrying strap that fit in the butt, but it looks like from your pics, that was sealed off. If you want I can help with the painting. We used originally two main colors for federation stuff, it was GM 7179 (dark grey) and GM 7173 (light grey) both are automotive metallic that we got from suppliers in CA. I don't know if they still sell them, but that was what we used on the actual movie pieces. Good luck on your restoration, if you need, I will try to find pics of the originals for paint reference.

Any help would be appreciated :) Especialy if it comes from the horses mouth!

I've bought a can of Audi-Silver spray paint which initialy seems a good match. But I will definately love to see some references!

This does appear to be made from several sections, the barrel, body, butt, handle and scope/light. With the black parts at the front being plant ons.

This particular rifle has a slight bend on it... holding it upright and aiming away from you, the barrel bends lightly to the right.

Oooh I think I have one of the same kit.

Its the one in the middle.

Mine also split due to an accident nearly in the same place just a bit forward. I managed to fix it but I am currently in the process of redoing the whole thing. I have the accessory parts, but they don't really fit... mine was just generic silver, because I didn't want to use all of my one can of medium metallic marblehead, which if you can find it is a really close match to the phaser/tricorder, (Boomerang/ Mk IX) colors.

Progress: A bit of paint overspray on the other side of the barrell to sort and some buttons to add.. then its a coat of lacquer to protect it from handling.

I think thats a scratchbuilt version made by a guy in thailand might be wrong i used to own one myself mine was a one piece cast and the details were very soft.

This version is made from several parts. It is comprised of these parts:
The handle
Butt end plate
Butt side plates x2
Scope/ torch housing
Forward hand hold
Black section atop the barrel
Black section below the barrel
Ribbed detail on top of the butt.
Trigger on spring
Main body molded in two halves.

oooh. definitely not like mine. Still neat though! looks good!

This came out really great. You displayed much more patience than comes easy with regard to the filling and sanding. The end product really goes to show how much a little extra time leads to a great end result!

Thank you.
It's far from perfect, but the best I can do with my limited skills and tools.
Can only get better.

hey guys,

has anyone an idea, where I could get pep files for that one?

course...
we want to build 2 of them our one.
but arent good enough to do it from scretch or clay, but have some experience on pepakura.

Very nice work! I've always thought the riffles were badass. And here I am hoping to make a little type 1 "cricket" phaser! :D
