They're not timing belts. They're some kind of thin rubber material. It's used on a few of the costumes including some Reavers and Wash's vest. Mal's susenders also have some thick ribbed elastic on them as well.

It arrived this morning. Certainly is very very large and extremely long, so I'm going to take it to my seamstress in about half an hour and have her take all my measurments and pin it all in place while I'm wearing it to ensure I get it perfect. Will get her to attach my custom buckles while she's at it.
For me the over-seas shipping costs to get it altered at Spacecity doesnt seem worth it.
Certainly is a very nice coat though, wonderfully made.

Well, after seeing how good your Mal is Chris, I may have to switch gears :cry
However, I did find a cheap pair of "Smuggler" boots.(see link) I bought black for my Solo costume, but I was hoping they would be close enough to double as Mal.

I was thinking the same thing about the timing belts. I have one from my car that was replaced and every time I saw mals suspenders from the backside I saw suspender parts that resembled that belt. Its weird that we thought the exact same thing. Its awfully close.

Hey guys. Here's what I was able to throw together to wear to Serenity opening night.
I'm really glad you guys are interested in this costume now, cause I want to upgrade my suspenders (and gun, but that's another thread). The ones I have right now aren't accurate to anything. Also, if anyone has a source for the buckles I'd be interested.

The Boots have been lowered to $260, he is unable to get the right ribbed look, but i think it can be done with black ribbed hose.

I don't run a big dollar shoe/boot making business, but I would think they could get a hold of different soles :confused
At least they should have a lower heel, and on their site I like other soles better.

So if you want a more accurate boot, I say go for these the price will be $260 until July first then i
