Firefly , Mal Reynolds questions.

I got my ribbon, it looks perfect! Here it is next to my attempt. (mine is the green one) I actually don't see even a hint of the green in yours.

And here it is again next to one of the other things I got in the mail today.

They're Steve Madden shoes, but not the right kind. The center strip is too wide and the other two are just stitch lines which are too far forward. They also aren't slip-on. And the soles are one color. I picked these ones because the sole was pretty much the perfect shape and the toe is square. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to make patches for the sides to cover up the stitching or if I'll just leave it. I guess it depends how close a match the spat leather ends up being when I get it. Yesterday I started carving the soles into the correct shape and I'm going to head to Lowe's soon and see if they have a grey/cream krylon fusion paint, because I've heard that stuff actually fuses with plastic, so hopefully it'll actually become part of the sole.

Great amount of info hear!! GOOD WORK!!
I just started acquiring all the stuff for my Capt. Reynolds outfit. Of all the links out there for the suspenders i only found one still active, that actually said they still have them in stock. They were a little over priced for my needs and had extra stuff with them. All i want is the suspenders. So i kept looking and Lo and behold i found this site.

Israeli Army "H" Suspenders

I hope it helps other new "Browncoats" out. When they come in i will post up some pics for everyone.

Yea i was pretty excited when i found them. They should be at my house by this Wednesday so we shall see. With any luck i should have my costume ready in time for our local "Cant Keep Serenity Down" event on July 11th.

For now I plan to use an old pare of Red Wing "Pecos" boots with some modifications, and I will go w/o the Browncoat.

But I hope to get one one day.

I found a leather hide in LA that's an exact match for the spat leather. I'm talking color, grain, and even the color of the backside. I'll post a pic when I get back home, as well as a picture of my progress on the shoe soles. They're looking good, I can't wait to turn them into boots.

Well on my end it looks like making a par of spats will work for me too, but i don't think i will be able to finish in time and under budget by Jun 11th.

My current idea is to take some reddish brown Pecos boots, from Redwing and modify them just a bit.

To make them appear like the have the correct height I will add about 4 inches of leather to the top of my existing boots, with a zipper on the enside. I haven't decided exactly how i plan to attach these "half-spats" yet though.

One idea is to use 4 snaps at 4 even points around the top of the boot, and add a zipper on the inner part to join the two edges. This will allow me to make different types of tops to the same boots, and there by use them on multiple costumes.( I could make some that flare out like on pirate boots and then some that go on up to just below the knee like on a pare of English ridding boots.)

The other idea is to simply sow the new "Half-spats" to the top of the boots, and leave the inside section unattached. I would then be able to be unzipped and halfway open these upper spats, slip the boot on, and then Zip it back up in the center section.

I know neither of these options will be even close to the "cannon" approved boots but I think they would work in a pinch, and i may even try to get some dark brown/chocolate leather dye and dye my boots the correct color.

Well, I have not made much progress in upgrading my costume, because I'm waiting until I loose the rest of my excess weight..

Hey, in 4 months, I've gone from a 52" waste, to a 44". I want to get down to a 38" or 36" (I'm 6' 3" so that's about right), and the earliest thing I plan on wearing my costume to, is about 6 moths away so I might just pull it off. :) (every finger I have, crossed. )

Sounds like you're making good progress.

Here's where I'm at:

Depending on how the spats look when they're finished I may hit them with a tiny bit of leather dressing to make them a little darker to match the shoes. The thing that's really holding me back from finishing all this is that I need a turkey basting pot or something else large enough to boil the pants in with color remover to get them to an even color. It's a large expense for a one time use.

Those sheus are a very nice base.

As for the pants, if you look at the instructions on the color remover, you may be able to us it in the washing machine. If so, and you don't have one, or don't want to use yours, you could go to a Landry mat.

I would just hate for you to have to buy a very large pot, that you will only use once, then have to find a place to store for who knows how long. (but then I live in a very little apartment, so I'm always worried about space.)

I've tried the washing machine, even with 4 packs of color remover and leaving the pants in for an hour, nothing happens. The color remover requires way more heat than the washer can provide to work. I have a 5 gallon pot, but it's not big enough to fit the pants in, the color remover can't get everywhere and the color ends up really uneven, which is what happened to my pants. Even washing them 3 times with bleach couldn't even it out, and I'm not letting any more bleach near them.

Well this is what i have so far. It isn't complete yet, but I expect to get the suspenders, Gun Belt W/ holster, and the gun in the mail this week.

The boots aren't right but they should pass for right now, since i am under a budget. I did cut some "Half spats" that will attach to the tops of these boots giving them about 4 more inches of height, so that may help out a bit.

Also is it just me or do the pants look just a bit to baggy?

It's hard to say from the one picture. How tall are you and what size did you order? It might just be a matter of getting the legs taken in a bit when you put the stripes on. You can tighten up the back belt as mentioned before as well.

LOL Yea I had seen the "Capt. Tight Pants" reference before, and hadn't quite made the connection until now. LOL

Well I am 5'9" tall and I ordered the size 44" waist since it said measure your "True waist" (this as I understand it is at your bellybutton). I did think about washing them in warm water to see if that would shrink it much at all, but as of yet I haven't tried.

I cant remember if they were cinched up all the way in the back when i took this pic so I will have to double check it later.

Thanks for the help.

LOL I do want to get some more accurate boots but right now the good wife wants a new bed and i cant spend $400 or more on a pare of custom boots and expect to stay living. So In post #109 of this thread I described 2 of my ideas on how to add height to my current boots to better complete the "Visual" effect. After all i think that having boots closer to "English" style height would eliminate some of the problem, any opinions?

Well, after I've made my own boots I'll do conversions. You pick up a pair of Steve Madden or other close enough shoes on ebay or whatever, send them to me, and I'll turn them into accurate boots. I'll probably charge $200-250 or so.
