Firefly - Illustration of Mal's Pistol

IÂ’m working on a large illustration of MalÂ’s gun. HereÂ’s the main image:

...and here it is as a line drawing:

I'm thinking of avoiding the whole "exactly how Mal's gun works" issue by doing a partially disassembled version rather than a "cutaway" version, like this:

This will probably be a poster-sized piece, most likely showing both the whole gun and the partially disassembled one.

Any opinions as to what else I should include? Variants on the design? Different types of ammunition?

Also, any suggestions as to what should go inside the currently hollow section on the right (above the trigger)?

All opinions / sugestions / corrections welcome....

You should redo the safety catch to be in horizontal "armed" position, imo. :thumbsup

Otherwise, amazingly cool idea, very impressive. Would be cool to have the Serenity version on the illustration too... :)

Totally SHINY.

For the empty space in the "receiver" area, maybe research some exploded drawings of semi-auto rifles or pistols of varying manufacture, to get ideas on how the "action" might look?

You could put the safety in the "fire" position on the assembled picture, & in the "safe" position on the disassembled one.

And IMO, I disagree about including the Serenity version. That should be a separate poster (like for a different model).

Anyway: :thumbsup :thumbsup

Looks great, very shiny work indeed.

I believe the slot-headed screw in the grip should be a hex-headed bolt however.

Howard.

This is pretty cool stuff. Will there be any sort of background?

Great work..

The panel that's removed above the trigger, it seems there should be some sort of mechanism exposed in there. It looks a bit odd just empty like that.

There will definately be a background - probably a tan similar to the Serenity valley map I did. It will also include other information, scrollwork, etc. Right now I'm just buttoning up the gun.

Noeland - you're right about the empty area. I'm actually looking for suggestions as to what shoudl be there....

You need to have a system of levers and springs that look to have a function in loading and firing.

And IMHO it should be semi-auto style innerds, but also should look cool. :) I think looking cool and looking "right" should be the goal. I included a few revolver examples anyway. :)

Here are a few suggestions of cutaway guns that might inspire you.

Hope they help inspire you. You can look up "gun cutaway" on google and find lots of images.

OK, per request, the safety is off and it now has the beginnings of a "real" trigger mechanism (although from a rifle). The plain square will be for a manufacturer's imprint.

Any further suggestions will be appreciated.

Assuming the 'thumbscrews' are the mag release, there should probably be a spring on the inner rod.

Here's the gun with the revolver inside.

From the Firefly companion book, Vol1.

Am I destroying the illusion? If so, I'll take the pic down..

A bit closer, using most of the suggestions (inlcluding Kaylee from Propcircle's suggestion for a mfg name - "Moses Brothers"). After I button up the gun, I'll start making a poster out of it.

I thought it would be fun to include a little odometer-type shot counter as well. That's just below the manufacturer's imprint.

You should consider contacting Titan Books with this stuff, and see if they would be interested in including it as a "fan made" graphic. It's damn impressive and very professional looking work, I think they might want it in the Firefly companion Vol2.
