Firefly Hoban "Wash" Washburn

Wash is up next. I was lucky enough to grab this shirt this week and am currently looking for the correct overalls.

Yea, I've been randomly checking ebay for the Ghost boots for years and never seen a pair. Somebody should sculpt the soles and mold and cast them in rubber.

Good find on the shirt, I have one myself but it's too large for me. I saw an old lady in the post office a few weeks ago wearing my size, but it would have been weird to ask. Haha. His jump suits are from Rothco if I remember correctly. The orange one is flipped inside out and tweaked a bit to make that work.

Any idea as to why it's inside out? Also are the tan boots pictured on that website what were used and then modified to be black and combined with another boot?

Wow, that is awesome! Please do share where you picked them up.

No idea why they flipped it inside out, maybe because it looked weird.

Found another 2 angles of the boots. Also this is the orange jumpsuit I am looking to locate, any info would be great.

You know what, it's been so long since I researched it, it looks like everything except the brand names of the boots and shirts fell out of my head. The Rothco flight suit isn't the one. I know that I have seen it before, though. I think think suit itself is right side out, but they made some weird alterations to the zippers and pockets that make it look inside out.

Thanks for the info, where did you score those?

I found them on eBay, about a year ago.
The fit pretty well too. Only about a half size too big.

I too am looking for his flight suits.
I'm pretty open to orange, red, or tan though. Whatever rears its head first. :)

Is the green one a Rothco? I also don't see any zippers etc on the suit I pictured, does anyone else see any?

Can't remember, but I'm looking through the Firefly companion books and I'm noticing that he has 2 different orange suits. The one with all the zippers stitched on the outside has no lapels, round collar points, and the sleeves cut off. The zipper tapes are black and it looks like the right leg has a horizontal zipper on the pocket and the left has a vertical zipper. Based on the concept art it also has slanted breast pockets and tightening straps at the waist, so definitely a flight suit and not coveralls. it also has shoulder patches and under arm gussets with eyelets. My memory is hazy, but I think that's US military style. The other orange one is the same style, just completely unaltered. And I think the green is the same type as well.

EDIT: I'm very sorry to tell you that I just figured out exactly what it is. A vintage (1960s) US military flight suit. They appear to have come with either black or orange zipper tapes, not sure why the difference. The only mod made for the show was cutting the sleeves off. They run around $200. That being said, the other orange one is a modern version, the one sold by Rothco is dead on:

Just a warning about flight suits though, if you're over 6' tall they will give you a pretty uncomfortable rub down if you know what I mean.

That is the one worn in Ariel. The one from some of the other episodes is the vintage one. You can find some of them on ebay for around $200.

Great find. I think I'll go with the one from Ariel for now seeing as how it's more affordable and goes with the shirt I found.

Sounds like a good plan. I'm currently trying to find the green one, which I think is actually coveralls. It has what looks like a patch pocket on the chest and a storm flap covers the zipper. Could be wrong on that, but it also fits longer which makes me think it's not a flight suit. I could go either way myself because it looks like he wears both of his main shirts with both suits, and the one I have that fits me correctly is the one with the Japanese temples and the cranes on it. I'm not planning to put the costume together until I can get the boots figured out, though. What are you planning on doing for those?
