Last week i was contacted by Jhyphen, who was interrested in obtaining a finished Pazuzu head from me. I was able to finish it yesterday. The finish turned out nicer than i expected and i thought i would post a tip on how to get a really cool and quite realistic old stone finish. This technique is probably old news to all the paintexperts, but it might be helpfull for the people like me who are still discovering the possibilities of paints & airbrush.
After cleaning up the raw cast, i gave it a coat of primer. I mixed a dark grey color (darker than the finish i was after). Using the 'dry-brush' technique i gave it a very subtle weathering with black. Once it was dry, using a soft large brush, i dapped on talcumpowder and gently blew off most of it. From about 30-40 cm away i then applied a light coat of dull clearcoat with the airbrush, using way more pressure from my compressor than regular airbrushing requires. This results in the paint particels semi-drying in the air. The clearcoat gives it a dull flat look and fixes the talcum powder to the figure and also gives a 'rough' feeling finish. I did the talcum powder/overpressured dullcoat 3-4 time when i was satisfied with the look.
here's some pics, hope you like them:
