Finished - 1:1 Millenium Falcon Bench Build

Alright, here's the finished product! I should definitely mention I could not have finished this bench without the monetary donations from the members of Garrison Titan and a good friend Micheal here in town who has spent nearly every weekend in my garage assisting with the project, usually being assigned with the not so glamorous stuff. He has poured so much money and time into this along side me, and I can't be more gracious.

Combine this with the "functional" table I created last year or the Augmented Reality application my friend/developer Adrien and I are working on, and it becomes something magical:

Original Post:

I've started to build a full scale Falcon bench for my local Star Wars costuming groups to take to conventions and accompany my Holochess Table. Due to time constraints (Hoping to see this thing done in under 3 months) I'm having to make some compromises at the sake of accuracy, but I'm confident it will end up looking good in the end.

I wanted to log my progress here in the hopes that some of the more seasoned minds here might be able to help me identify some parts.

I'm using dimensions found in these blueprints (This thing is big):
falcon_bp_1.jpg falcon_bp_2.jpg

I've designed and started to build a basic frame:
falcon_bench_frame_model.jpg 7370_10156364724295527_6971345357263507048_n.jpg

I was hoping some here might be able to assist me in identifying some parts, I know a lot of parts tend to show up all over the Star Wars galaxy, so there is a chance someone has already identified these on another project.

The first are the spherical lights that line the top of the bench, these lights seem to be used all over the falcon in multiple colors (white, red, green, blue, yellow). They seem to be some sort of vintage lamp lens and look to be approximately 1.5" (4cm) or so in diameter. They look to be nearly identical to these, but these are too small :( If I cant find a source for them, any suggestions on how to fabricate them (cut acrylic spheres perhaps)? or an alternate source for the chrome ring around their base?
lights_1.jpg

The second is this box that is embedded into the seat "cushions" it looks to me to be some kind of electrical junction box, perhaps the box even came with some of the greeblies already in it. It also appears to me to have some aluminum rotary knobs in it? Anyway, Im at a loss and just guessing.

Here are some example junction boxes, and the aluminum knobs I'm referring to.

Hi T,

First, I'm really excited to see how this is all going to turn out! :)

Second, as far as the panel lights, we've been able to trace them back to some of them being Barnfeld Furnace Indicator lights but they are SO RARE and near impossible to find. I used a silver door stopper and a round 2" magnet for the Full Scale Falcon group build.

For the couch greeblie... that's anybody's guess. The original designers bashed together so many different unrelated parts / things / objects to create a single greeblie you might have to wing it and just replicate what you see. That's what I've been doing with the many of the cockpit greeblies for the full scale build. Also, the greeblie in question appears to be the same "button panel" greeblie that R2 pushes to get into the escape pod at the beginning of ANH!

What are you going to use for the couch pads?

Can't wait to see more progress pics!

Re: 1:1 Millenium Falcon Bench Build

Yes!! You rock SofaKing01! I knew you would know! I love your build so much, its marvelously inspirational.

I'll look into parts to fabricate the lights. And looks like I'll be printing out the majority of the couch cushion box greeblie, thanks for finding it in the escape pod (its it most definitely the same), and giving me the incredible reference that came with it!

The couch pads are being carved and sculpted in extruded polystyrene and then sprayed with StyroSpray 1000. The seat will be a real cushion, covered in fabric.

Thanks again!

Making progress.

My printer was out of commission for a while, But I got it working yesterday and started prototyping the cushion greeblie:

Re: 1:1 Millenium Falcon Bench Build

very very cool! I am excited to see this come to life. Love the cushion greeblie, I have been wondering how to build those for my own bench, fantastic!

I am also with SK on the cushion question. I purchased foam floor pads for mine, and I have attached them to the "curved" portions of the the build, but I have not yet cut up and attached any for the entire seat yet. SK and I discussed them holding up to people getting in and out of the bench and what kind of damage that would do to them. I would love to know what you have planned for that?

Re: 1:1 Millenium Falcon Bench Build

wow, i am an idiot that does not read apparently. Just saw your post on the cushion and pads:facepalm

Re: 1:1 Millenium Falcon Bench Build

That's looking awesome! Can't wait to see this progress.

Re: 1:1 Millenium Falcon Bench Build

Dude! I want one! I would love one for my basement! As well as the bar from the cantina scene!

Re: 1:1 Millenium Falcon Bench Build

Sorry for the lack of updates.

I've finished framing out the top boxes, and decided I might as well make the ottoman/detached section as well.

I've mapped out the greeblie/light placements and started drilling and assembling the lights. I've made some custom circuit boards and housings so I can program the lights.

I had a group of friends over this weekend to help cut out the remaining seat cushion parts. I use a 3D printed routing bit to shape the edges.

Re: 1:1 Millenium Falcon Bench Build

I put a coat of StyroSpray 1000 on part of the bench this evening, It looks like this method is going to work very well, this stuff is a very durable hard shell and it should protect the delicate EPS foam base very well.

It went on a bit drippy (I brushed on 3 coats), but I should be able to sand it smooth once it has dried completely.

I have some greeblies I'm trying to identify on the ottoman/seat. After looking everywhere imaginable for a clear image of the middle of it, I finally remembered it was featured on the Star Wars phone apps "Jakku Spy" augmented reality experience thingy. I thought the whole back was just rocker switches, but there is a lot more to it! Can anyone identify any of the greeblies other than the rocker switches, especially the large circle thing in the middle? It's possible they were used elsewhere on the Falcon.

SWEET! awesome work. I am very interested in how the StyroSpray 1000 works out for you.

Hey Tea,

I know the original designers used a LOT of film projector parts and other similar mechanical parts. It looks like something that might be laser cuttable (is that a word?) :) I would suggest looking for parts on Ebay (as a start) for film projectors, typewriters and maybe even record players, tape decks and washing machines from the 60s and 70s?

Re: 1:1 Millenium Falcon Bench Build

Here's the bench as of last week, but there has been quite a bit of progress since then :)

Fantastic advice SofaKing01! I picked up an old film projector at the flea market, I also took apart an old camera. A nice haul of Falcon-looking greeblies!

Re: 1:1 Millenium Falcon Bench Build

Sorry for the lack of updates!

Loads of progress. Everything is base-coated, now I can move on to the fun stuff! I finished all the electronics! All the lights that are on in the old films are on on my bench, but occasionally those that are off will come on, or blink.

I was able to get a couple layers of liquid latex on one section cushion this weekend, this will stick the fabric to the foam, give it a rubbery feel and help the fabric to last longer and resist tearing. I started weathering it as well.
