I wanted to do another X-wing similar to the studio scale ones i have built in the past. Due to size and costs the 1/48 FM kit was the best choice for me. Im adding 4 engine LEDs , 1 for the cockpit and 2 for the R2 unit which will have an alternating red/blue light on the front. The R2 unit will be controlled from a small circuit i bought a while ago.
Heres the box art. Thanks to Graham at Relish models for the fast delivery and supply of the kit.
First thing i looked at was the engines. The nozzles are molded solid so i ground and drilled them out. They are not perfect as the cutouts around the centre should be square in shape. Im happy with the round ones though.
Here a photo of the rear of the nozzle before and after
Here is the front of the nozzle
Heres the finished nozzles
Next i had to sort the engine part. This is where the LED will be mounted. The front pegs had to be removed as well as the end of the engine which was also molded solid. They have been given a coat of grey primer , which will be followed by white. A plastic disc to hold the LED in place will also be added along with a clear plastic disc with a pebbled surface to diffuse the light.
The LEDs have also been wired up with the resistors. I went for clear ones that i will paint with clear red and orange. The LEDs came from eBay cheaply. 50 clear LEDs with resistors for around £5!!
More later.....
