Finally! A CORRECTLY detailed red 5!

This is a red 5 model that I'm getting ready to sell on FEEbay(ebay). I got sick of seeing all the CRAPTASTIC GARBAGE being touted as "pro built" on ebay! So this is my response after four months of research, and sixteen,to seventeen hour days painting, and repainting this to correct specifications with grueling pain due to carpal tunnel syndrome, and a spinal injury that suffered from a car accident that left me partially paralyzed on the left side of my body, with cutting, shaping, and sanding tiny parts to finally reach this moment! I have MANY pics of this in multiple stages of completion. This has fiberoptics, and LEDs in it to make it more realistic! More pics to come as soon as I can load them to my computer from my camera. Click on any pic once to enlarge, then double click on it again to see it full size. I hope you like it!:)

Thats a very nice build there:eek
Could you tell what kind of kit this is?

Thank you,I'm glad for that! I've only shown these photos to the forum, and one other person. This is an MPC model that I modified with plastic sprue. The death star tile is made from HDMW(high density/medium weight)plastic. My friend got this from where he works, but this was made from the same plastic that the now defunct Poly HI Solidur corporation made their snowmobile skis from. This was incorrectly cut for a customer, and was to be thrown in the trash,so my friend of twenty plus years got the OK from his floor manager to save this. Otherwise this is never available to the general public. The company is now owned by Quadrant. They make all kinds of plastics for trains, and other industrial uses,as well as snowmobile skis. Anyway,I decided to use this as a tile because of its' milled surface. I then decided to add greeblies to the surface to make it look more like the death stars' surface, not just ornamental. I thought of doing this after seeing an icons model on ebay. This isn't something is available to the general public. I scratch made it,and the mount. The trapezoid mount is made from a block of cherry with sheet strene glued to it. The other parts are made from sprue stretched over the stove top burner. The radiator(on the left side of the model)is made from a popcicle stick cut in half then glued together, then cover in sheet styrene.

MPC and ERTL have produced three different scales of X-Wings. Is this the largest one that has the electronics with the kit?

Also, I'm curious - you have what appears to be a red stripe on the upper engine intake nacelles; I've not seen red here in reference pics.

Weathering looks really good! Would be interested in seeing larger pics.

Thanks Rob! You're right! These red stripes were modeled after the life size x-wing. This is why these are there. I already had this weathered when I noticed my mistake! These won't be on the next one that I build. I also put some greeblies on the bottom of the fuselage as I didn't have any other reference at the time, and these too are modeled after the life sized version. This is the 1/48 scale 12" original model made by MPC before the 1/72(8 inch),and 1/46(14" inch)scale Ertl models. I made the wiring assemblies myself. I sell these from time to time. I also made all the little pieces in the cockpit for the targeting computer, and hoses are made out of guitar strings(I'm a musical instrument, and guitar maker). The engine housings are wrong, and the turbine shafts(which many people mistakenly call sealab parts)don't have the greeblies on the sides of them as I didn't have enough sprue to correct this. I will on the next build. I shaved off the incorrect mouldings on the laser guns,I wish I had shaved off the extra panels on the wings-I didn't know this was wrong until AFTER I had painted it like this! I put plastic inside the wing details as they were missing completely, but I used gift cards,so this made them too thick to put the correct detail panels on them! I have better pics of this, but I'm still figuring out the picture attachment on this forum -It only lets me put six pictures on at a time! You can't see it in these pics, but I cut the ends of the laser guns flat, and recessed the tips so that they would look like the ILM orginals. I also replaced the proton torpedo recesses with brass tubing, and cut out the holes,so that they can be inserted into the fuselage. The R2's head was horrible,so I shaved off the details, and replaced them with decals, and stretched sprue. I cut out the eye with a machinists bit,and put a clear piece of sprue in the hole to look like the real deal! I originally had fiberoptics for the little sensors beside the eye,but they came loose, and can't be seen now!:unsure

That is a thing of beauty!! Love it.

Sorry to hear about your accident aswell.

Thank you! I have more pics on the way,but my mother cut open her finger, and she's at the doctor right now. She needs me to come, and get her,as she passed out while they were stitching her finger closed!:unsure

OK! Im back with what I hope will be worthy of everyones' time looking at,and being able to get a better idea of what red 5 should look like. I have the (forbidden)colour corrected versions of some of these photos, but out of personal, and professional courtesy-I'll not distribute them. You can be rest assured that this correct to the original as far as colour, and placement are concerned. Please compare these to known ILM photos, and see what I mean. I spent THOUSANDS of hours scrutinizing every small line, curve, and spot to ensure accuracy to the original with the exception of the refueling inlets on the the bottom of the fuselage, and a couple of decals that are only present on the life-sized stage prop(including the red stripes on the engine intakes- I just felt that this looked more like the stage prop). Please feel free to copy any of my pictures if you need reference material. I have taken over TWO HUNDRED pictures of this model in various stages, and I'll update this thread from time to time,as I get these photos loaded from my camera, and colour corrected.

OOOooppsss............Some of these pics I forgot to change the colour vectors on! These weren't ready to be posted yet! Anyway, more pics to come.

I have to say you have done a masterful job on this. The paint and weathering rivals the SS kits I've seen!
