Nah, they've been milking this sad old cow for so long they didn't want any threat to their lack lustre releases.

Still wish they'd just move on.

They tried to move on and took the FF franchise on a downward spiral ever since FFVII. That's why so many people were asking for FFVII to come back; because they haven't been able to deliver on any FF since.

Sadly Square is like every other game company that has been around since the 90s or earlier: the folks who created the best selling franchises have retired or moved on and been replaced by folks who just aren't up to par with the older makers. This is the same for the folks who started the companies, alot of these companies were created by programmers who were into games but they've been replaced by suits. That said Square and others make a lot of really good games but they don't think we'd buy them if they brought them over when that's not true. One of their 3DS jrpgs that they brought over outsold the last FF13 title by a huge margin and it was more of an old school square game. The Japanese sadly are listening to US gamers and the hottest trends instead of bringing over stuff to set the trends.

Saw the trailer today, not really impressed by it tbh, IF I ever play it I will have to think of it as a whole new game instead of a remake of my all time favourite game. Nothing before or since ff7 has moved me inthe same way, and I think all the modernisation of the game will take away more than it gives.
