Filming the original Enterprise

Many of the 2001 shots were done with photo cutouts. Look really close and you'll see they were black and white photos.

The shot looking down on the moonbus cockpit was a b&w photo with color live action projected into the windows.

Even so, it looked pretty frakkin' good for its time.

To me this (amongst others) is still a beautiful shot!

Here's a shot being made by Linwood Dunn, inventor of the optical printer.

Quality varied a lot, some shots were nearly perfect. Some, weren't.

Here's some really bad blue spill on the Enterprise.

EDIT- Found another shot of the camera dolly.

And the guys who were working in that field were nearly as young as the ILM guys later on, see the pic. The situation that GL found himself in, with a lot of the knowledge and equipment being lost because of noone being interested in Sci-Fi for a long time, and no central archives etc., just wow. Reinventing stuff, and did GL really buy all of the 70mm and optical printer equipment he could get his hands on, as all those documentaries suggest, or is that just a legend?
