Okay, so ive been really curious lately about animating my pieces. I made a sculpture recently but it really bothered me how static it was, just didnt seem lifelike. so I decided to try and create a simple animatronic using some basic servos and an "Arduino Uno" board. Not wanting to overwhelm myself i decided, after a recent trip to Disney world, that creating Figment would be a great way to start off.
not too large of a sculpt, Very limited movement, plenty of space for electronics, seemed like a good place to start. Here is where I am now, I finished all of the detailing on the main head and neck(except for his back spikes) and i have made a mock up of the horn which will be cast in resin.
I plan on creating a three part plaster mold and will create a skin in the mold using silicon. I really want to stay away from latex, i know it is cheaper but i feel like silicone will hold up better with the movement. Ive cast resin in silicone but this will be my first shot at creating a silicone skin. any helpful tips from anyone who has done this process? Can you use the regular brush on silicone used for moldmaking? I was thinking about brushing it in then making a sort of slush cast to make it thicker and fill the seams.
