Fibreglass Han Solo in Carbonite

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NEW & IMPROVED

Neil,

Wow, the paint work really turned out great!

To our RPF'rs in England, you guys gotta jump on this! I'm finishing up a HIC now (with advice from Neil) and it's a lot of work!

I wish someone in the USA offered a cast HIC like this!!

Cheers!

Brad

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NEW & IMPROVED

I don't suppose mine had this paintjob as well? Anyway, looking forward to getting it. Thanks Neil.

Hey Eric, yours is the same. The courier collected yesterday. I'll let you knpw the airway bill number once I've got it.

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NEW & IMPROVED

Thanks Neil.
Han Carbonite was delivered yesterday morning but I didn't get chance to unwrap it until last night. Here's a quick pic of it standing proudly in my garage. I'm going to leave it in there for a few days to give the "new paint smell" some time to vaporise!
It's an awesome piece of work and I'm really excited to finally receive such an amazing display piece.

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NEW & IMPROVED

Wow that's awesome, although I would always have this feeling that Han Solo was trapped in my house, but I guess that's the point!

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NEW & IMPROVED

I'm drooling... along with spending a fortune on the panels & parts! :wacko

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NEW & IMPROVED

Vos - the panels make it. Looks awesome!

I also like the new grey better.

I can't wait to see more pictures.

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NEW & IMPROVED

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NEW & IMPROVED

For the block...Vauxhall Mistral Grey basecoat (15% matt), dusted with Daewoo Stone Silver, washed with black acrylic. For the Han section....Daewoo Stone Silver (15% matt) washed with black acrylic....bringing the tone back up to the Mistral. The control panels are Daewoo Stone Silver with aluminium inserts.

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NEW & IMPROVED

Eric,
I've sent you tracking info regarding your HIC. Check your PM box.....I can't email you at the mo as I'm in Oz.

Chris,
Is it on your wall yet? ;)

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NEW & IMPROVED

Vos, do you need to 'key' the fibreglass before painting??

Your paint scheme looks awsome!!

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NEW & IMPROVED

Hi Neil,

Hope you're having fun in Oz.
Yes - Han is on the wall but I may have to take him off again and keep him in the garage for a few more days because the fibreglass smell is making me get a bit high every time I go in the room. :lol
Is there anything that can be done to reduce the smell or will it go after a couple of weeks?
Looks absolutely awesome though! Thanks again.

Chris

So it's a win/win situation then Chris? Not only do you have a fantastic Han In Carbonite prop to admire, but you can get a buzz whilst doing it? :lol
Only joking, kids... solvent abuse (even unitentional) is a killer, so don't do it... remember, "Drugs is bad, mmm'kay?"

Chris, here's a 'housewives tip' for you regarding the smell of the GRP - try placing several cut onions around the room, close to the HIC.
Not 'taking the pi$$', really... it's supposed to soak-up the smell from fresh paint, and I'm guessing GRP as well.

Let's see a pic of it on display!

Cheers,
John

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NEW & IMPROVED

Hi Chris,

Hmmmm...my sense of smell for resins and paints isn't very good. I had 3 in my house at one point and couldn't smell a thing :unsure

I know that fibreglass mannequins are not shipped for 8 weeks after they are made due to the fibreglass taking that long fully cure.

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NEW & IMPROVED

Hi Neil,

:lol I think you've been working with fibreglass too long and it's probably burned your nasal cavities!

My display room door remains closed and there's not much ventilation in there because I don't open the window so that's probably not helping the smell. I think if something as big as this is kept in a relatively confined space, it will always appear to smell worse than if it were stored in a larger room.

I've tried John's "housewives trick" with the onions today so fingers crossed that will help.

Have fun in Oz!

Cheers,

Chris

Neil,

Thanks for sharing the colors used. I live in the USA so I'm not sure how easy it'll be to get those colors...?

How did you come to the decision to use two shades? I always thought the HIC was all one color, but pics do make it look like the Han section is a lighter shade.

Thanks!

Brad

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NEW & IMPROVED

I'm not so sure Marcus. It still looks to me that its the dark grey, or black weathering that makes the outer frame and box look darker. Look at the silver between the weathering and look at the top section of the frame.

I really wish i could have a good look at the real prop in person before i paint mine.

Keith.
