Fibreglass Han Solo in Carbonite

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NOW WITH CONTROL PANELS

I had a standard cellulose automotive base coat decanted into rattle cans with 15% matting agent added. I went for 'Rover Storm Grey' and lightly dusted 'Toyota Silver Lightning' over the Han section. Then lightly weathered with Grate Polish.

Neil, that is a stunning work of art!!! It looks amazing.....fantastic work!!

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NOW WITH CONTROL PANELS

Neil, this is just awesome. If I didn't think it would be an absolute fortune to have one of these shipped to the US, I'd be begging you for one.

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NOW WITH CONTROL PANELS

Hi Gino...thanks mate.
Yep, shipping to the US is not cheap. £450 door to door air freight.

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NOW WITH CONTROL PANELS

Neil you really did a fantastic job on this project. I am very impressed. Are you thinking about lighting on your personal copy?

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NOW WITH CONTROL PANELS

Wow, thats AMAZING!!!

The best Han in Carbonite since yet!!!

Great work... :thumbsup

Btw, whats the price for shipping to Germany...? :angel

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NOW WITH CONTROL PANELS

Thanks guys. Yes, I will hpoefully be lighting my final personal HIC. Darthchromer has done some awsome work with lights.

DarthLuumzl....PMed you.

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NOW WITH CONTROL PANELS

I'm about to order some cast off original panels from Darthchromer. Do you know if these fit your HIC Neil?

The more i look at mine the more i like it. You have done a great job Neil!

Keith.

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NOW WITH CONTROL PANELS

I've been discussing this with Kurtyboy. They fit perfectly except for the tabs. I haven't physically fitted one yet but I believe the tabs (or at least one of them) may need to be moved a mm or 2. I am guessing that this is due to shrinkage during the production of the Illusive version that was measured for the drawings and shrinkage during my casting process. I have a set coming from Glen already. I'll let you know for sure then.

Thanks Keith, they take a bit of work to finish, but it'll be worth it :)

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NOW WITH CONTROL PANELS

I've been working on a couple of Han Carbs for the last couple of weeks. Here is one that I think turned out pretty nice. I've used a lighter, warmer metallic grey for the base coat and it is weathered with black acrylic instead of grate polish.

I've also been working on a set of Glenn's panels...he's done a great job on them. I still have to make the detailing parts for the hero panel including photo-etched steel grill and 7-segment display.

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NEW & IMPROVED

Looking good.

The paint job is amazing, as usual!

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NEW & IMPROVED

Woo hoo! That's my carbonite block being picked up from Neil today.
OUTSTANDING work Neil. Can't wait to see this in person tonight.
Thanks for all your hard work and perseverance on making this available for us. Such a long time since I made those blueprints so I'm really happy to finally be able to pick up a box made from those dims. Paintjob and weathering looks perfect.

(y)thumbsup:thumbsup

Chris, you're one lucky sonofagun if that's *your* HIC prop that Neil has posted pics of... looks abolutely amazing!
Are you gonna 'pimp it out' with Darthchromer's Volvo-cast panels, and an accurate 'hero' illuminated panel?

*The* single best HIC I've ever seen, bar none :thumbsup

Neil - you deserve an RPF Oscar for turning out such an amazing HIC replica. Well done mate :thumbsup

And kudos to all the others who contributed to this end-result.... Cking for the CAD measurements for the block, Vashstampede for making the front panel and Darthchromer for the original-cast panels :thumbsup

....or maybe I should let Neil do the whole 'acceptance speech' thang instead?! :lol

Cheers,
John

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NEW & IMPROVED

Hi John,

Hell yes! I'll be sending my payment to Darthchromer for the control panel kit in the next few days and Neil will be finishing them off for me when he gets back from vacation. I'm really looking forward to adding the electronics to the hero panel when Darthchromer makes them available. I've wanted an accurate replica of the Carbonite prop for SO long so it's a real thrill to finally have something "archive-worthy" to display.

BTW - I thought it was damn cool to scroll down the page and suddenly see the first pic of the Carbonite "rising up" like it's coming out of the carbon freezing chamber. LOL.

Cheers,

Chris

That new paint job is pretty amazing, Neil. I'm pretty f-ing excited too!

Still got to find a few more Volvo panels though...

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NEW & IMPROVED

Whoah Marcus! You're going for 8 original Volvo panels? That's cool.

Neil - that darkening up of Han's body, hands etc compared to the surrounding Carbonite really worked well. Looks very reminiscent of what the prop guys must have done when they made the original. Glad I asked you about that before it was packaged ready for collection! :sleep

Cheers,

Chris

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NEW & IMPROVED

Thanks guys.

Yours will match Marcus, don't worry ;)

Chris,
Yeah, this is a much better paintjob than my first effort. It's mainly down to switching from grate polish back to acrylic for the weathering...and using a lighter gun metal base coat, obviously.

Don't forget to post a pic of it hanging on your wall once you've unpacked it!

Neil
