Fibreglass Han Solo in Carbonite

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite

Fantastic work!!!! You have done an incredible job. I have always dreamed about having a HIC one day in the house....such a great iconic prop! Can't believe I missed this thread until now...will check out the whole thread now

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite

John, they aren't actually painted yet, they are straight out of the mould - it's just the pigment I use in the gelcoat that gives that grey colour.

D'Oh! Should have gone to Specsavers! :lol

After laying down a basecoat (HALFORDS Rover Storm Grey Metallic) for the block and a shade lighter for the Han Solo front. I am going to use a grate polish instead of an acrylic wash (like this one: BLACK LEAD GRATE POLISH) using white spirit or lighter fuel to thin it. Once it has dried you can lightly buff it and use white spirit to wipe it off. I'll then use a matt lacquer to seal everything.

BTW. You'll need about 4x 500ml cans of paint to cover the block.

Cool, thanks for all the advice from a 'pro' :thumbsup My luvverly RX-8 (pre crash into a stone-built bridge :cry) was metallic Galaxy Grey and I was toying with the idea of using that on the Han Solo front. I'm sure I have a Mazda 'touch-up'stick in Galaxy Grey that I'll never need again, now the car's been reborn as a thousand Coke cans! LOL
Dunno how it would look with the Rover Grey Storm metallic on the carbonite block though... can you plz keep me informed of what colour you use for the Han Solo front on yours?

And thanks for the info on the Black Grate Polish thinned wiyth white spirit to make it into a wash, that could be brushed or sponged-on?

Cheers,
John

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite

:LOL

Brush, sponge, cloth, finger...doesn't really matter as 90% of it is removed to leave it in the low points.

I'll post some good outdoor photos of my test piece once it is painted. I am getting the paints this week.

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite

I put down my base coat last night...Rover Storm Grey. the this morning I masked off the edges and lightly dusted Toyota Silver Lightning to create a subtle difference between the block and the Han Solo section.

I have just done the light patina with grate polish to bring out the detail.

I had about 15% matting agent added to my paint mix.

I am really happy with how it turned out and am going to be going this route with the paint job when I do my final casting.

Due to recent control panel developments I am going to attach my scratchbuilt, completed panels to this casting tomorrow and sell it off.

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - TEST CASTING PAINTED

It's just amazing! I'm dying to see it finished! If I only had time... and skills... heh. ;)

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - TEST CASTING PAINTED

Looks great.

Whats grate polish? Do you have put some sort of sealant over this polish?

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - TEST CASTING PAINTED

It's for restoring/cleaning cast iron fireplace grates. It dries and can be buffed t a graphite finish. If you only put a small amount on you needn't seal it.

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - TEST CASTING PAINTED

what way are you applying the paint? aerosol tins or proper car paint through a gun?

the results are very convincing

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - TEST CASTING PAINTED

Thanks! The grate polish is a nice idea.

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - TEST CASTING PAINTED

Hey Zorg,
Just rattle cans. I had them custom mixed at a car body specialist.
Cheers

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - TEST CASTING PAINTED

I attached my panels today. They stick out a little too far. I've made the angle slightly too steep on them. I'm glad to be having some Volvo panels coming for my own casting.

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NOW WITH CONTROL PANELS

Thanks Lee. I think you'd be surprised...it'll be cheaper than most scratch built SS models I reckon.

Cheers Brad!

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NOW WITH CONTROL PANELS

My completed test casting is now on Ebay. Gotta raise some money for more materials.

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - NOW WITH CONTROL PANELS

It looks great Neil.

I'm going to make the detail on the "background" of Han a bit more pronounced in some areas on mine using filler.

I'm thinking of painting the whole thing in a bare metal shade of silver and use weathering to darken areas. But i need to look into the painting side of things a lot more yet.

Anyway, well done!

Keith.

Re: WIP: Han Solo in Carbonite - TEST CASTING PAINTED

That is AMAZING! Well done mate.

And I thought it looked good in the primer, but the colour and grate polish really brings out all the detail and texture on the shirt and trousers especially :thumbsup

Fantastic work Neil... roll on next Wednesday! ;)

Cheers,
John
