Female Predator build (wip)

My big project of this year is making a female predator for myself. So here's the process that i've been going through so far.

The first phase was the designing of the armor. I didn't want to just take one of the statues and copy paste, I wanted to make my own. Therefore, I took elements from a few different female predator statues and put them together
P2.jpg sh1.jpg tumblr_kzpd850Rkb1qzyhb5o1_1280.jpg
After finalizing my armor/design of my predator I began working on making the templates and cutting out the armor pieces. I went for a cheaper route and used 5mm foam for 90% of the armor. It still had the thickness and strength to not just rip on me when wearing it. With the armor I wanted to make it all more leather like, so I used the tin foil method with the aid of an iron I heat pressed the leather design into the foam.

Once everything finally had it's texture I cement glued/hot glued the armor pieces together. I cheated on the "studs" and used hot glue globs as dots...as you can see in the picture below.

My chest piece is a little different from the rest. The "boob" cups are made from worbla as well as the skeletal hands, but the rest of it is foam. The whole chest piece attaches to a leather vest/coat I made and the boobs themselves will end up being either velcroed/snapped/magnet to the body suit. (At this point I still need to finish the suit)

For the suit itself, I didn't want to go the whole latex route (been there done that, I know how troublesome it can be to wear) instead I bought a typical body suit to work with as a base. I still wanted texture on the suit without having to deal with latex. I found that using Puff Paint worked wonderfully to create the scale like texture I wanted all over the suit (I don't even need to create it when I finish airbrushing it!)
Here's an early picture of the front torso and a leg:

Puff Paint usually dried to touch(without smudging) within 30 minutes and it fully dries within 24hours. It's got the exact texture I was going for without having to use latex and cottonballs. You can even go over your scales to make them bigger/thicker, it stretches nicely and doesn't snag at the fabric. The Puff Paint looks and feels like latex once dry (without the stickiness). I am going to be using claws for the toes and fingers (instead of the gloves and feet you can buy) to keep that predator look

At this point I tried on and did a test fit of all the armor on the suit. At first I was worried that the straps for the armor pieces would fall (fabrics tend to slip on spandex) but with the aid of the puff paint I do not have that problem.

Since these pictures were taken, I have fixed up a couple of the armor pieces that needed slight tweeking, I finished the neck rings (wasn't done in the photos), adjusted the look of the shoes to make them more suited to fit the whole design.

Currently working on finishing up all the dreads. I'm using the backer rod method and latexing the crap out of them to weigh them down better (I do have rings that help as well). Soon, I'll be airbrushing the suit and mask to my chosen color scheme but in the mean time I'll just keep latexing those dreads. ^_^

Welcome - yet another female build. It great the ladies are really stepping up. Great job on your morph suit. Really like the spot patterns you have created. I was planning to use the same technique with the puffy paint as spots to create some texture one female yauntja build. Are you going to go with the black and white scheme or are you going to add color over the spots ?

I did the backer rod dreads on my previous build. I used plastidip with some good results. I have a set cut
for my new build. What lead you to
choose latex for the dreads !

Looking forward to seeing more WIP pics.

Yellow, orange and black are my color scheme, I still need to airbrush that on to the suit as of yet.

Hmmm I didn't even think about using plastidip, definitely would be less time consuming and probably would get the same results. I went with latex because I saw a tutorial on how someone did theirs with the backer rod and latex. Maybe I'll go test that out on a few dreads and see how it differs from the latex ones!

Just s question but why not do those first ? I'm doing a design modeled after the Sheila predator with basically the same colors. The spots will be black and applied on th suit after all the colors.

I've already tested the fabric with the black applied, the paint doesn't do anything to it if the paint is applied after. I did it first because personally it helps me better block out the design I want to achieve on the suit. So instead of just winging the design I at least have something to go by. I am also still new to using an airbrush, so I can't just whip out something from scratch.

That's a very good reason and just what I was looking for. I always like to hear why people do things in hopes of learning something new and I did. I was planning on using chalk or something erasable to layout the color and spot patterns but what you did is even better. THANK YOU VERY MUCH and keep up the WIP postings. At least you know people are watching and learning from what you do. What are you going to use for paint ?

Yeah, I was going to use erasable pens but I know sometimes those don't actually erase all the way especially on lighter colored fabric. (Actually experienced this on other costumes I've made) I am excited about doing a big paint job with the airbrush, i've done some small shade details on other things so I'll see how it all turns out!
Yep definitely will keep posting as things come along!

I'm planning on using "Wicked Colors" brand by Createx airbrush paint.

Welcome to the ranks of the Lady Preds! Very promising work so far. :)

Just a thought... (not a critique) but the undermask that you have looks quite big for your frame. I know all the male pred masks are gigantic... you might want to think about using a smaller one before you make/buy a Bio mask.

SPGFX (who conversed with you above) makes a fantastic female undermask modelled after the Shelaa stature which is scaled for our heads. I use one myself, and he is in the process of developing a smaller more feminine looking Bio mask to fit it. Not sure if you're planning to cast up your own bio helmet or not...

Anyway, the Ruffkin stuff is awesome.. it just seems a bit on the large side for your frame. Even if you still go with it, I'm sure you'll make it look good (y)

Ha! Thanks!

Yeah, one of the things i was worried about (especially when getting an Elder mask) was how big it was going to look on my frame. I did cut out about 2 inches on the neck line (on both sides) to make it a bit smaller. The neck thingy at the time of these photos was not finished, since I was test fitting the armor pieces I needed to know where the shoulders sat in accordance to the mask and neckline. So as of now, it should be smaller but I'll definitely keep that in mind. So if it still looks too big even after that adjustment I may just make a legit neck ring thing.
And I am not at this point looking to make a biomask just yet, so I don't have to worry about that. And I choose the elder predator mask because dang I love the design of them so much but hey I'll probably do more builds after I finish this one because this has all been a fun experience.

Very nice work, I'd missed this thread so far for some reason, the spots look great so far, will you be toning the white down?

Yes, I'll be attempting to tone down the white as much as I can when I get the paint job going. Once I get the paint job done the headpiece and suit should match a lot better.

A little update, been working on my prop for the costume

P2.jpg I'm attempting to make my own sword from this figure.
Granted, I'll admit I've never been one that's been good with props but I'll at least try and get something that at least resembles it. ^_^

I used Pink Insulation foam for the base, carved and sanded her down into the shape. Then dremelled the groves into it to get that shell/scale texture. I probably could have done it better or used a better method with it but it's crunch time and I just gotta finish what I can before the convention.
I sealed it with wood glue and several layers of gesso (don't recall how many)
898917_10102047697589583_106441785_o.jpg

I primed her with a flat gray, then sprayed bronze, brown, gold and silver to create depth in color. (Sadly the photo doesn't really do justice to the colors which is kind of upsetting) It is also black washed and then dry brushed silver highlighted.

The handle is PVC pipe with some more insulation foam on the end. Handle is covered a fake pleather, I wish I new how to do hilt tying so I could have made the leather part "pretty" looking I guess instead of it's just wrapped around the pipe. If I have time I'll go back and fix it. I'm also planning on covering or adding to the area where the hilt and sword match up, since I can't exactly tell what the transition looks like from the figure. Thinking about a little bit of leather wrap that extends downward then a few hanging skull decorations.

The teeth bone thingys are constructed from classic EVA foam. Sanded and shaped using a dremel. Sealed with mod podge and each one individually hand painted using basic acrylics (colors: antique white, sun yellow, amber brown and black) And once again the photos really takes out the color as they are a lot darker in person.

The teeth bone thingys are more flat because they lay directly on top of the sword and then connect at their sharpened tips, so making them skinnier worked better.
Here is a picture with all of them together on the sword base, at the very tip you can see what I mean by the teeth connecting.
Ha, well I noticed now that the tops of the teeth definitely need to be darker so once I finish the rest of the sword I'm going to go back over those tops with a brown finish.
11847468_10102051644794353_1915971284_o.jpg

I'm currently working on the spine pieces that go inbetween the bone teeth at the top of the sword. They are also made from insulation foam, just waiting for the wood glue to dry so I can continue with the gesso then get them painted. After that I'll get that end bone piece started, in which I haven't decided what stuff I want to use to make it, either a thinner foam or something else because of it's weird structure.

At this time I haven't decided if I want to add hot glue "slime/spit" on the end of it to give it a little more detail or not.

Always a fan of a good weapon and this one is bad-ass. Can't wait to see it finished. Great work !

Mask Update time!

Spent the last 12 hours painting my mask and hoo man has this been an experience.
So this was the my first time using an airbrush to do any sort of paint job. I was pretty worried at first about how to go about just painting with one. Then trying to figure out how the patterns and stuff went, but after several video tutorials I felt I had an idea.

I did say I was going to paint my mask yellow, orange, black...(albino predator colors) however after the way the yellow turned out on the mask, I couldn't do it. The colors turned out way too bright and I had to start from scratched. I decided on medium gray, midnight blue, and black.

The beginnings!

Mouth Coloring (this is the second attempt at coloring it, first one came out too orangey/brown, and this one is a little too dark for my likings but after the teeth being added I am a bit more comfortable with it)

WOW. Great job. I find it hard to believe that's you first time with an air brush ! Come on you can tell me. I'll keep your secret !
What paints / process did you use. Pros-aid ? Pax ? latex mask paint ? You kick-in ars' on this build and I really enjoying watching it.
Thank You.
