Female Armoured Captain America Original Build (Foam)

So after subbing and following SMP's Armored Cap build ( http://www.therpf.com/f78/captain-america-armor-variant-wip-pic-heavy-229701 ), I have been inspired to build my own but with a rule 63 twist.

My girlfriend and I have been building Ironman and other projects via paper pep files and we feel pretty confident in our craftsmen skills, and so to thank her for her help I'm going to build her a suit of one of her favourite characters, Captain America. I will be using SMP's design and shapes as a basis for this but of course i will be changing some of the angles and such.

I have never built with foam before so I will be leaning heavily on the tips that are provided in the thread i mentioned and the know-how of the members of this community. So with out further ado, I present some of the preliminary sketches and ideas. feel free to comment your opinions for changes and what not. (I apologise that I am no artist)
WP_20141219_007.jpg Here is just a quick sketch from the front to get the idea down, posting to show some of the progress of the design V__6AB4.jpg After consulting with my girlfriend, we decided to move up the star and lessen the prominance of the stripes. This is what she sent me (she, however, IS an artist.. lol, also, sorry I couldnt get the image to turn upright) you can see here, we opted out of armoured plates for the pants for the time being. we also decided to add a utility pouch belt, a thigh strap gun/ knife holster, and leather armoured knee padding.
WP_20141220_003.jpg Here is the profile and back view of the new design
WP_20141220_006.jpg And here is the new design from an odd third angle-ish view. it better shows the scale to the body and gives an idea of how thew front and back connect.
A: is a "hole" for a peg on the shield to slide into to hold onto the back
B: Shoulder blade padding for the shield to rest on
C: The chest plates, shown here to get a sense of how the front and back connect to each other.

We Will be working ong this periodically over the holiday break and then once we get back to school, we will be working on it in our free time, I will update as they come along. feel free to give your opinions and constructive criticism. Thanks

This is awesome, love it! I'm glad you like the thread and are putting a new spin on it. Subbed and looking forward to more. Cheers!

looks good and functional. will you be making a smaller shield? i dont mean because she's a woman, i mean because she's likely shorter and an average cap shield is about 26 inches across and might sit uncomfortably when mounted on her back. i'm excited to see where this goes

Yes I will, I'm going to measure the width of her shoulders and add about an inch (for the shoulder bells) so that it fits correctly to her back

Hey Scruggs, I remember you asking a bit ago about the templates that I used for the armor. Not sure if you saw it or not, but I posted them in my thread (that you linked above). If they're of any help, please take them and run with them. And let me know if you have any questions. Cheers!

Wow, I hadn't seen that, thanks for letting me know. I'm subbed, I dont know why it didn't tell me of a new post. But thanks, this is actually a tremendous help!
also, small update, I'm working on pepping a smaller, scaled shield for my girlfriend, who I will now refer to as Ashley to save time. I'm using a new file because the one I had been using wasn't screen accurate and kept warping. Pics to come soon!

Another Small Update:

I finished up Ashley's Shield just a few moments ago and showed her, she's really happy with the size and over all shape. below are a few pics compared to my standard sized (24") shield for my cosplay. the pep looks kinda rough, I am not happy with it, but she seems content and we are pretty confident that the imperfections will come out in the finishing process.

I believe the files used were: standard size - file by bimmer
and the smaller one Is by someone to the tune of "jimmytheMoose" or something similar, if anyone has the exact name, ill be glad to post it.

On her shield, I drew on the logo's detail lines to make it more movie accurate. please feel free to let me know what you think. We are probably going to try to fibreglass and do the first layer of bondo this weekend.

As before, Will post updates as they come. and feedback is more than welcome, Thanks!

UPDATE TIME!

So I know I haven't updated in a while but things have been pretty hectic over here but here is a peek-in to what has been going on:
I began building a shield as I stated before, but I ended up not liking how it was turning out so I decided to just paint it to test out the colour palette that I had chosen. (We like it, please feel free to give your opinion)
I then took to a different file and began a new build of the shield. pics of both are below (old shield is on left)
WP_20150205_008.jpg
We then began to rough build the chest piece of the armoured portion of the suit, we decided to use some of the thinner craft foam sheets from walmart at least to form the rough templates.
we have kinda edited and moved around some of the details (like the chest embellishments). so far the thin foam is holding up well and is working wonders as far as being malleable. as always, your opinions/feedback is welcome. thanks!

have you considered going the steel sled route for the shield? it creates a nice and light weight metal shield just by cutting it from a sled! all youd need to do is paint it, sttach a star, and make some nice straps for the inside

Looks great! Nice fit and the proportions are spot on.

Thanks! Means a lot coming from you given the quality of your work and you being the originator of the idea and inspiration. I am having trouble with the "jet pack" area. We wanted the wings of the pack to resemble more of a shoulder blade type shape but also pretty mechanical. Do you have any advice or suggestions? (also applies to everyone)

I had considered that but it will be much heavier, more expensive, and harder than the rote with the fiberglass, thanks though

I use poster board a lot to work up new templates on things like this. I would start with the center, get that settled. Then add a piece of board to one side, hold it up to the back and sketch your shape. Trim away and repeat until you get it the way you want. Since you can shape the foam with a heat gun, it should be easy to transfer the flat poster board template to foam and form it around the curve of her back.

Once you have the base down, you can cut parts out and recess them, add shapes with thinner foam on top with contact cement, bevel lines out with an xacto knife - the sky's pretty much the limit with your mech details.

I think the colors you chose are good, It's all about personal touch in my opinion as far as that goes. I like what I see so far, original builds are the best if you as me.

sorry for the lack of updates lately guys, there's bee na lot going on with comissions and exams. I'm almost free now though. Just figured I would share some of the progress so far, I have tons of pictures during the process but I already typed up a long message with them in it and it got deleted before posting :/ so, in my irked state, I'm only going to post some pics of the final product.

This is actually not the same shield as I posted above, we actually finished that one and it was WAYYYYY below standard so its just kinda sitting around, this one is better, but still not up to par (If anyone wants to buy them, PM me).

So without further adieu, here is the 18" shield

and here it is with a quick and dirty cosplay that my friend wanted to do for the Ultron Premiere.

So: where does this put us now?
well, I am going to rebuild the shield and make a better one when I find the time, I am also going to be doing some redesign with some influence from the Ironman "barracuda" suit that Smook modeled up and see where that takes me. I'll be sure to update and get feedback. Thanks again for your time!
