Faux Submarine Door- Thoughts?

Gone but not forgotten.
One of my extreme, back burner projects is eventually making over my library into sort of a Jules Verne/ Nautilus look, and I need to make the door to the downstairs bathroom look like a ship's hatchway.

I'm thinking of just doing faux brass hardware, with the existing woodgrain still showing through as the base, and maybe a lighter, resin copy of one of these in the middle-

Any suggestions to make it cool and still stay on a bit of a tight budget?

Thanks!

Get some of those steel cage cover light fixtures and put red lights in them. Set them up to be able to switch between them and regular lights.

Then you can call for emergency lighting.

I have absolutely no advice to offer that would help you in the slightest! However that sounds like a really cool idea and i'd love to see some pictures if/when you finish it.

I suggest you register on this forum.
It's everything Nautilus related and even has a few people decorating entertainment rooms.

Yup, they're on the shopping list! The local Lowes has plastic ones that could be refinished for around 13.00 - 14.00 ea. :)

Depending on how many you need that could be alot of work. I am sure you could find metal ones suited for outdoor use or something.

I know, but whenever I can try to do this, it's going to have to be on the uber cheap. The plastic ones will be fine since they'd be up out of reach, I'll just get the ones with the black frames, dis-assemble them, mist them gold and hit the high spots w/ some antique gold Run n' Buff. :)

Here we go, something like this-

Refinish the existing luan door, and do everything else with plant-ons and thick paint to hide the woodgrain. :)

Can anyone think of any design input to make it cooler?

Thanks!

I'd look into getting some plastic (pvc or styrene) 4x8 sheets. 1 piece in 1/32 to 0.04 inch thickness or so to reskin the door with, then a 3/16ths or 1/4 inch piece to cut the details out of and glue on top. Find a spare carriage bolt and make a small mold of the domed head and when you have a little spare resin from casting helmets cast a bolt head for your door details.

Are you planning on making the center door wheel the actual door handle & rig it so it must be turned to open and close?
