Fantasy Purchase: Resin 1:1 R2D2

one of my friends used to have a vac'd r2 with alu dome, altmmans made it. a cheap way to make a droid these days is a styrene droid, very accurate but cheap and lightweight

Chaucer44 offered exactly what you're referring to back in the day (resin cast 1:1 complete kit). Don't remember what it was based from though. I believe it was a DP. But weight was just simply insane. Actually the only thing more insane, was the amount of "clean up" work that was involved with these :confused

He's banned here I believe. But I know he still does things. He puts things up on flea bay to this day. You still might be able to contact him regarding one of these.

Best,

FP

Several years ago, I remember a guy offering a resin R2. I'm betting it was the same guy Fettpride mentioned, because these were massivly heavy, needed TONS of work (including warped parts), and still cost several thousand dollars.

I wouldn´t know about Resin, but have you considered joining the R2 Builders Club? My lifelong dream was to have an R2 and thanks to the club, nowadays I´ve got a nearly completed R2 Unit here in my living room....

in theory you can buy a R2D2 kit, there are so many parts suppliers around that you can buy all the necessary resin parts without having to wait for parts runs.

A&A can even do all the innards (not necessary for a static R2), and skins for you.

have a look around the R2 forums.

Thanks for the advice guys. I guess I always thought it was not beyond the official licencing to put out a hollow plastic R2 that was 1:1. But that's just a dream. Every bit of info is good to know.

I actually was a member Builders a little while when I reevaluated an old project a few years ago.

About a decade ago, I started a mainly scratch built R2. When I was able to find parts for sale on builder's sites I would buy them and add them to my piece. Unfortunately, I was used to building props with no guides and forums when I was a kid, only a steady hand on the VCR pause button. I neglected to really take advantage of the internet back then with regard to actual dimensions and built many parts innacurately. My dad, who is more handy than I am, spent months building R2's legs with bits of wood based on specifications I made from scaling a small R2 toy. They are WAY off (BUT ACCURATE TO THE TOY...DOH). I call them R2 terminator arms because they are WAY thick, but I don't have the heart to replace them! (My R2 can beat up YOUR R2 :)). Working on the unit was a special project with my pop and he still reminds me that we need some finishing touches and to paint it.

I was considering opening a new thread about it, but I will just put this here for now.

Here are some pics:

Please note the detail under the dome is upside down, but its not glued it, I just fit it in wrong for the pics. Also, the arms are not secured to the body yet, which is why they are a little crooked.

I think the R2 you and your Dad built looks fantastic.
My Firefly collection has many less than screen accurate pieces,
like my Dobson Astra made from AL flat and round stock, that are close enough for me and are more about "hey, I built this" than "look what I bought".

Anyone who sees your R2 is going to know what (or who) it is.
Unless they hold a picture or blueprint up to it, it looks right to me.

Building my own R2 has given me the confidence to reach beyond my self imposed limitations. I feel as though I can accomplish just about anything!

Thanks so much Mike, I really appreciate the kind words, and thanks for the laugh jonny5.

Man for scratch built legs...I'm truly impressed....and it takes a LOT for me to be impressed with R2 stuff :).

You almost have a fully built droid...IMO it would be better to get yourself some legs...or build them out of wood and RC that sucker. You're almost there!

Great looking droid!
