Fallout Style AER10 Laser Rifle build

So, after seeing amazing AER9 builds on here from such amazing people like Volpin and Jm419, I decided to try to make one myself. I got myself a copy of NeXxt's Blueprints, got some dimensions for the final product and headed off to Home Depot for some wood. I quickly realized that I am not skilled enough to be placed in the same category as the aforementioned builders, so I decided MY prop will be the AER10, so I can make a few customizations and say that the final product was a failed prototype or something.

Here's a link to the facebook album of my updates if you don't want to scroll through everything Login | Facebook (even though it says "login" it takes you to the correct page)

I've also added an album of this build to the site. It'll have copies of the pics uploaded to here, until I get to the finished pics, then they will take over and the build pics will only be on my Picasa and this thread itself.

Everytime I try to link a picture to this thread, all I get is the broken image icon, so for now pictures will be attached to my posts.

One is of the beginnings of my MF cells, just two 2" PVC end caps epoxied together. And the other is my stock, just about ready to be sanded.

I'm not sure I'm as talented as you give me credit for. I'm only following a set of blueprints.

Nevertheless, I do have some experience (especially on that damn stock :lol ) and if you want any help, let me know. What kind of wood are you using?

And, you know, you have to use gold in the focusing chamber, right? :lol The AER9 is the last one (according to the Fallout Wiki) that uses a steel focusing chamber.

....if it's that important to you, I will paint the inside of the barrel gold--just for you.:lol

I forget which wood I bought, but I just bought two 2'x2' units of it cause it was cheap, 3/4" and sturdy. I'll double check tomorrow and get back to you on it, I'm gonna pick up some 1/4" for detailing, otherwise my gun will be HUGE if I keep using 3/4" for everything.

I figured I might as well also post some pics of the costume I'll be tinkering on. after all, who's a big enough fan of Fallout to build a gun but not work on some sort of outfit?

This paintball armor is going to be modified and painted into a combat armor-esque top as part of my costume. I've seen a friend of mine use the plastic from a 12 gallon trash can to make Boba Fett armor, so I'll most likely do the same to go over the padding that's already there.

Since I'm a bartender, I have fairly easy access to bottle caps. I googled a template for Nuka Cola and Sunset Sarsasparilla and put them onto Miller Lite caps with a sticker paper I got from Best Buy. I changed the red to blue for the Nuka Cola Quantum caps and put them onto Bud Light caps. After 2 nights I had over 100 caps in my bag.

I bought this Mentats tin off Ebay. It was about $7, came with the very professionally done Nuka and Sunset Sas caps, and 2 Jolly rancher candies. The same seller also has a lot of 24 caps for sale for around $24. They are a mix of Nuka Cola, Quantum, Sunset Sas, and a few are Star Sunset Sas caps.

Hey, I like those. I might have to do some of these. I just scratched the paint off of my caps, lol.

I'll be buying sandpaper and more wood later today, so I'll actually be posting more pictures of the rifle build and not just stuff about my costume. But first! One last group of pics of the Fallout props I'm creating.

I got this toy shotgun from Walmart for like $12. They also have a rifle version that without the clip would look just like a Cowboy Repeater. It has shells that you can load, and will eject any in the chamber when opened. I cut the shotgun down to Sawed-off Shotgun size and shall paint it. Also, AER10 build related, you can see that my MF Cells are almost done.

I finished the MF Cells! They aren't too pretty, but I just need em to look close while they're in the gun for the web series my friends and I are planning.

I also finished the Sawed-off Shotgun. The shells don't look like real shells, but on video they'll look real while ejecting and be a nice addition to the realism.

sometime after Spring but before Fall. Haha. We want to do a few days of shooting for 3-5 4min videos. We have some basic story ideas, but so far it's only the two of us with crappy cameras. I'm going to be reaching out to people in my area about getting extras for other wastelanders and some raiders. Unfortunately, most people are going to have to provide their own costumes also.

The reason we want to do this is because we were inspired by Wayside Productions "Nuka Break" and all the awesomeness that it entails.

Ah. I have some Nuka bottles that you could use, or of course my AER9 if you'd like to get in on the run. Not that you need to, but it could be kind of hilarious to have both of them in there.

"Hey. Why does your rifle look different than mine?"
"Uh..."
"Yours is so much higher tech! Is that one of the new AER12s?"
"Uh..."
"Can I see it? Can I hold it? Can I -"

ZAP

"That's why it looks different."

I actually do have one of the videos planned around addressing the issue of what differers between the AER10 and 9 model, and why the 10 never went into mass circulation. Long story short, the 10s have a *fire everything left in the MF cell* switch that has devastating effects (think Halo Plasma Pistol overcharge shot, but with a laser).

Oooh, cool.

...so you'll be wanting to borrow an AER9, then? [/shameless plug]

:lol As a salesman (bartender) I truly admire your product placement and upselling attempt. Haha. For now I think that just my 10 will do, but I'll let you know if the plan changes.

I had planned on this taking place in and area of the midwest where tech is rare due to a large scale fight a few years before between local BoS and Enclave that resulted in the destruction/use of most advanced pre-war tech. So mostly just regular guns and melee weapons, with the very rare AER10 my character carries, that way people tracking him for the tech could be a plot point if we can get a few more episodes in.

But like I said, you have a beautiful AER9, and I may just find myself wanting the basic model someday.:)

Likewise. We might just have to arrange a trade. Lol. It could be cool to have both of them on my wall.

Here's a nice side by side of the Sawed-off shotgun from the game and the one I made.

I'm sanding the crap out of the AER10 right now, but without a belt sander, progress is slow and all pictures look about the same as pre-sanding. I'll be cutting out the plates to go along the grip and start assembling the barrel soon.
