Hello,

I'm looking to create a vault suit from Fallout 4, but I'm not very knowledgeable about fabrics and was wondering if anyone knew of a good stretch fabric with a waffle/diamond pattern in it like in these reference shots and promo trailer.
(and links to where I could buy said fabric would be awesome)

Not sure what the material was supposed to be in Fallout 4, but I do recall in Fallout 3 they were saying it was supposed to be denim. I think there's a fair amount of leeway in what material you use depending on which Fallout you're going off of.

Yeah, looks a lot like denim from a distance, but the waffle pattern is somewhat baffling, never seen a real fabric like that! Hm. A large weave might approximate the look, but a weave won't give you anything in the way of stretch, but with decent tailoring it could look pretty fantastic anyway.

Having a quick look, there are some waffle type fabrics but few stretch, since the pattern would deform if it did. Not the kind of fabric to stretch, though you might get a bit of stretch out of it if you cut on the bias.

This is the best match of fabric look I've found:

And these are good colour wise with some texture, but it's certainly not that raised square design:

This one does have some stretch, but I'm not sure of the weight of it:

This one, not too bad. Also a knit but the colour is a bit dull. Good for a weathered look maybe?

Fallimar,

WOW! Thank you for the links. Some of these look really good and I look forward to researching them more after work.

I was going to say denim as well, but I remember in New Vegas one woman saying something about leather. I thought maybe the leather is on the forearms where the Pipboy would go.

There are two primary canonical Vault Jumpsuits. The ones in 1, 2, and 4 are skintight and stretchy. In 3 and NV, they are more similar to handyman jumpsuits. The redesign of the F4 bodysuit appears to be lycra with a mesh stitched onto it.

I'm planning to wear this to Dragon-Con, so Atlanta, GA in the summer heat of August. I think I can rule out denim and leather as an option ;)

I have a denim suit I wore to DragonCon this past year and it was actually rather comfortable (considering I'm from the northern wasteland of Canada). As for the fabric. My first guess would be spandex or lycra with a weave screened with latex or silicone (similar to the Tron, Black Widow and or Superman movie costumes)

Not sure if this thread is still being reviewed by anyone, but I believe I may have found a material for the thinner, spandex like jumpsuit from various Fallout games. This cotton lycra is the best material that I've researched to match the slightly-stretchy-but-not-too-stretchy material that the games have. The pattern doesn't match too well, but it is the best I've found as far as color accuracy (according to my computer screen: Pixelbook). I'm looking into designing a suit as well for Fallout 76: I will update here again if I go through with this fabric.
