falcon and slave 1 in 1/44 (falcon finished)

Re: falcon and slave 1 in 1/44

Continuing on....

Scratchy gave me some wonderful insight into getting the cockpit fitted. Great advice (this guy is VERY good) but I'm gonna be brave and forge ahead in a slightly different direction.

I'm going to use the front ring from the clear styrene windshield that came with it and use it in conjunction with his resin frame.

We'll see........

Re: falcon and slave 1 in 1/44

Well I've been insanely busy with work so I haven't touched this stuff.

Anyway I've started back on it and I want to finish all the cockpit stuff tonight. I seriously have no clue how you guys do this stuff. Holding a 2mm long piece of styrene with tweezers while glue is drying is impossible.

And I only have three little bits!

Re: falcon and slave 1 in 1/44

Well, I think I got the window frame fairly positioned. I still need to putty and sand.

If this doesn't work then I'll order from shapeways. Mind you, I don't really like the look of the 3-d cockpit they have. Maybe it's just the picture but it looks off

Re: falcon and slave 1 in 1/44

Well, I've started the panels. I'm trying to use mersejohns paint recommendations but so far I'm not that happy with mine (I tried for some substitutions) but we'll see when I get some warmer colours on

That looks fine to me, at least in the photo. After you weather the hull, those colors will get knocked right down.

Re: falcon and slave 1 in 1/44

It's amazing how subjective that base coat is. It all depends on the light. The room I was in had fluorescent lights and my phone camera is awful

Re: falcon and slave 1 in 1/44

Man, some of these panel covers are way off. They're a lot lighter than I thought they would be. But I think I will tread lightly here and use oils to weather them down

Re: falcon and slave 1 in 1/44

One thing I'm noticing about this kit is that it doesn't seem to fit together as seamlessly as the first time I built one. There was a lot more flash this time, too

Re: falcon and slave 1 in 1/44

Starting to put her together. I'm pretty excited about this. The last one I did had such an awful process. I actually have a plan this time. The next thing I will do is to weather each panel with oils. Then I will do the streaking with pigments.

The one thing I'm not sure about here is clean coats. Should I put one on before I start the oils? I'm using enamel paint a for all the airbrushing work

Re: falcon and slave 1 in 1/44

the rule of thumb is to seal between every layer of detail. It makes it easier to remove something if you mess up.

Re: falcon and slave 1 in 1/44

Started to do some oils! Much like fitchenfoo's large falcon, I'm going to try and weather each panel individual. Hopefully that will show subtle differences between them that will work in my favour. Or....it will look messy.

One thing I've heard time and again is that on the smaller models you have to stay a bit lighter and be gentler. My airbrushed panels did come out a lot lighter than some falcons I've seen. I decided to stick with that and darken them with oils.

Re: falcon and slave 1 in 1/44

I'm still not sure how I will do the streaking. Either oils or pigments. I really need to practice that
As you can see on my old one, I actually used gundam markers very lightly and they kind of worked in some places. It kind of looks like a scaled down studio model version of the streaking.

I'm also not sure how I will mount it. In the past I've used threaded rod, but I might use a metal rod and. Have it coming out of an asteroid

Re: falcon and slave 1 in 1/44

I'm working on the bottom with the oils. So far so good. I may go back later and lighten it up with dry brushing. You really want to avoild the panels looking like a coloured quilt

Re: falcon and slave 1 in 1/44

one thing that is REALLY driving me nuts with this process is losing brush bristles onto the model.

Re: falcon and slave 1 in 1/44

Almost done the oils for the bottom. It's looking sloppier than I'd like so I might go back with some in white and tone it down

Re: falcon and slave 1 in 1/44

Again with more oils. I thought I'd throw this pic in to show how awesome the resin cockpit is that I got from scratchy. He really did a great job.

Unfortunately I only get about 10 minutes a day on this thing so it gets a little patchwork.

After the initial oil coat I will clear coat it, then go back with more oils for some more specific work. As well, I will tone down what needs to be toned down.

Then I plan to clear coat again and finish up with pigments for the streaking.
