Well, it's taken me 3 months to finish this, but here she is, a Tamiya 1/48 F4U-1D corsair. Modeled after bird 167 aboard the carrier Bunker Hill in February, 1945.

I decided to go with a faded look, like she's spent to much time topside gettin' some sun and fresh sea air.

Cockpit is stock with Eduards' color PE upgrade and gunbays are True Details.

Well, I replaced the wonky antenna with a new one. I used some fiberoptic cabling as it just happens to be the correct scaled size.

As always, questions and construtive criticisma are welcome.

Enjoy.

Re: F4U-1D Corsair

VERY nice job, great detailing! :thumbsup :thumbsup
I have to admit to a fondness for this airplane, it's my favorite plane from WWII!
Loved this plane since the old Baa Baa Black Sheep TV show.
Makes me want to go out and buy one but I would never get mine to look this good :confused
Thanks for letting us see her.

I am real lucky up here we have air museum with F4U and with the Super Corsair and a restored Zero. Alway a blast when they fly.

Great detail!!! I wish my models looked as good:thumbsup

Mind enlightening me how you get the silver details in the grooves of the wings/fuselage? Is that a wash technique?

Beautiful.
Corsair is one of my firm favorites.
Any advice on the kit?
I've got one unbuilt.

If you're building it straight from the box, there's only one area you have to be wary of - the wings. If you build it wings down, attach the inner wing assembly, wing spars and outer bottom wing piece to the fueslage first. After that's dry, attach one top outer wing piece to the spar at a time. The problem is in the dyhedral design of the kit wing. If you don't do it a piece at a time, you'll end up with huge gaps at the wing-fold seam and saggy wings. So glue it on and hold it in place, making sure to keep that seam tight, until it dries. If you're doing wings up, then there's no problem.

The rest of the kit pretty much just falls together. Decals are great and snuggle down beautifully with some decal solution. I opted to paint on the wing walks as the decals are too black to be in scale. Plus, they look better painted on.

Very nice work. Love the weathering, especially the oil streaks! Good stuff.

You know, that little bit of detail seems to garner the most praise. And I just did it as a little afterthought. I had some wash left over from adding grease/oil to the wheel assemblies and figured I'd use it up. Took about 3 minutes total, but I guess it really adds to the finish.

Re: F4U-1D Corsair

I absolutely love Corsairs...saw one fly with a jet last year at our local airshow. You did it justice, that build is phenominal. Great work Gig.

Re: F4U-1D Corsair

Thanks again, gang :cool

I think I found the almost perfect material for doing the aerial antenna.

From talking to some people, it looks like the real antennae were about 1/8" diameter. In 1/48 scale, that's about .0026". As it turns out, the fiberoptic cable I use at work is 62.5 micron, which is about .0024". I can color it with a sharpie so that it's visible, as well.

I say almost perfect because, well, it is fiberoptic glass. While it can take some bending, it can be too easy to break. So as long noone touches it once it's completed, it'll be fine.

If it works out, I'll post some pics tonight.
