Evil Dead Chainsaw

Thanks a lot guys!

In the same vein, for those who follow the comic book series, my next prop will be the "Sap Master 3000" chainsaw, which appeared in the story arch "Army of Darkness: Shop Til you Drop Dead". It was described by Ash as the "Holy Grail of Chainsaws" and sported a diamond-toothed chain, large exhaust pipes and titanium blade.

Groovy! :love

ok so I may have lied a bit. My new prop is not the chainsaw from shop till u drop dead, its actually...

Ash's metal hydrolic hand from Army of Darkness. Made from the glove of a suit of armor and a lot of badass genius, Ash quite literally built himself a hand to replace the one he had to cut off in Evil Dead 2. It not only moves and responds like a real hand, but it has the ability to crush solid steal without effort!

The breakdown!

First I took a black rubber anti-weather glove (dunno where they sell them, I got mine from universal wardrobe), painted it silver, and set it aside, then I took squares of cardboard, measured and cut them based on the sections of my fingers, and taped them individually to the glove itself with duct tape. I then made a palm shaped cardboard piece as well as a back-of hand shaped piece, binding them together with Duct tape, but spacing it apart to leave space to slide it on and off the glove. I then reinforced the space between both pieces with cardboard pieces.

After Id measured it, I cut the seperating pieces, attaching velcro strips to them to make the top and bottom parts detachable. After the base of the glove was designed, I got a sheet of soft aluminum, cut exact matching chunks out of it to glue on top of all the cardboard pieces I'd made earlier, thus making the glove look like it was made out of metal.

I then painted the entire prop once more with a metallic silver paint, letting it sit. The final piece was the hydrolic "finger movement joints" on the top of the glove. I took swivel-neck straws and cut them down to the right size, saving the swivel part to give it a pump look. I then cut another piece of aluminum, cutting out four slots to fix the straws inside of, bending the entire piece to sit on top of the back-of-hand part, but still be raised. I then cut a thin piece of aluminum out for the base of the hydrolic portion, and another curved-shape one for the front. I then proceeded to paint the whole thing with another coating of metallic silver paint.

The prop itself fits perfectly to my grip, which is important for this one because I'll be using it with guns and my chainsaw, and handling them is difficult with a bulky glove. The finger pieces are permanently affixed to the glove, so you simply slide the glove on, then velcro the main body of the gauntlet around it. I may or may not make the crank wrist portion, since I'll always be wearing this prop with my long-sleeved costume, havent decided yet. Hope you guys like this one!

And for my next outfit, just in time for Mayhem...

This is the S-Mart uniform from the ending of Army of Darkness. I simply bought a blue colored smock, colored the red trim myself to match the AOD pattern, made the S-Mart pocket protector out of carboard and a printed image of the S-Mart logo. The nametag is just one I bought at a convention a lont time ago. The undershirt is simply a blue button-down shirt that the color was right for, and the tie is bought from Walmart.

It was just a hand saw and a LOT of hard work... ugh, I didnt enjoy that part, haha. As for the aluminum, I just got some that was thin enough to bend with some plyers and my bare hands.

I built an Evil Dead chainsaw from a Homelite XL a while back and it was such a great experience. Buying a movie prop is one thing but building it yourself brings a whole different level of accomplishment and satisfaction to it.

Went from this:

I later added splattered blood and grime to it so it looks more messed up. Can kinda see it here:

To anyone thinking of attempting something like this, I'd truly recommend it! A really fun project!

Very nice work sir! I especially like the way your saw blade came out in the end, how did you accomplish that part?

Nicely done, I have two Homelight XL chainsaws, I think I need to add this to the make myself list

It was actually a brand new bar and chain that I sanded all the paint off with basic old sandpaper. Took a while!

Then just sprayed some fake blood on it and let it drip down as it was drying. Gave a good effect I think but am tempted to spray on even more. The more the merrier I say!
