When I found out that Evil Dead the Musical would be in Oklahoma this Halloween (just 3 hours from where I live in Arkansas). I knew me and the wife had to go. Since I'm going I might as well go in costume. So I started working on my saw. I bought a Homelite XL chainsaw and removed the engine and cut off the top handle. Then I started making and collecting some of the parts.
Next I sculpted the vent thing that goes on the side of the pull start housing.
Then I made the mold. cast it in fiberglass resin and glued it to the saw
Then I took the parts that you attach the chain bar and chain to and added some styrene so I could mold it and make it all one piece.
After I made the mold I casted it in Fiberglass backed resin.
I trimmed it, painted it, added a spacer to set under the muffler to raise the muffler to the correct height and bolted the muffler on.
Then I made a mold and casting of the top piece. I orginally made this from styrene but needed it to be way stronger so the final piece is made with fiberglass bondo and resin.
Then I stained and painted everything and added the toggle switch and mounting pieces that were cut from sheet metal.
More staining and painting other pieces
Then I assembled all of the pieces. Added a real chain bar and chainsaw chain. And went to work weathering using various washes and paints.
Here is the finished prop saw.
I will post pics of the finished costume after this weekend. I plan on making another one hopefully with sound, smoke, and moving chain. But that will be later. I plan to sell this one to fund the new one. I'll post it in the junkyard later. Special thanks to this forum and all its members and especially EDChainsaws who used to run Evildeadchainsaws.com for sharing his plans and pictures.
