Eva foam vs sintra

Hi all. I just wanted to know is Eva foam REALLY as fragile as the clubs like the 501st and MMCC make it out to be? Because I have a 10mm Eva foam heavy infantry mandalorian suit and I've been trying to remake it in sintra, and sintra is just... Not going very well. (got 4 failed chest pieces to prove that) it doesn't stick with super glue, it doesn't shape very well, it shatters if you try to cut it, it takes forever to cut and it's too thin for the heavy armor.

I'm trying to get good with sintra, but this material is a nightmare and making me want to quit.

The issue wit the Major costuming clubs and EVA Foam is not Fragility, but durability and length of life. One of EVA Foam's strengths is its flexibility and ability to compress, however, that becomes an issue with paint. You can prep the surface and get a good paint job, but, over time, sometimes even the first time you wear it, that flexibility will causes creases and cracks in the paint job. Plus EVA foam will start to deteriorate and break down the more it is flexed, as it will when you wear it, and it can hold can absorb sweat which causes an odor issue. All of these are not really issues if you make an EVA Foam costume and wear it a handful of times to Conventions, but some active Garrisons/Bases/Clan in the Major Costuming Clubs have the opportunity to do literally hundreds of Events a year, and a member can attend as many of those as their personal life and schedule allows, which will severely compound those inherent EVA attributes.

But this is not the place to debate Costuming Clubs Rules and Operating Procedures. They are private organizations with every right to make their own rule, just like TheRPF might have rules some people don't like, it's also their right to have their own operating procedures. If you don't like them ,you don't have to join, just like people don't have to post here if they don't like the rules here.

As for your issues with Sintra, from the way you describe it, I am almost led to believe you aren't actually working with Sintra. Not being able to Super Glue it, and it "Shattering" when cut it, plus it taking a long time to cut, that sounds like Acrylic/Plexiglass, not Sintra. Sintra should cut just as easily as EVA Foam with a Sharp Clean blade, and it should super glue together super easily, and I have never seen Sintra shatter while cutting it.

Maybe some more details, and even some pictures would help.

Apologies for bringing up the other organizations. I'm really not even trying to join them, lmao.

I really just wanted something that would hold up for a while, maybe better than foam.

But the stuff I ordered was called "foamed PVC sheet" and it's not cutting anywhere nearly as easily as foam.

At any rate... Here's the stuff I've been working with. It's 3mm thick, and I've been trying to cut it with a craft knife, and glueing it with loctite professional super glue.

I used Sintra for my Mando build (outside of the gauntlets and shoulders) and have used it on my other projects as well. I use a sharp utility knife and have never had anything shatter on me. To mold/form it, are you placing it in boiling water? It will become pliable after being in it.

The utility knife is brand new. I literally took it out of the box last night. And I've been using a heat gun to shape, which has gone... Okay-ish.

But since I've got some money to spare I decided to pick up a scroll saw and a belt sander from harbor freight.

Difficult to see what kind of material you're using. As others have said, Sintra is the perfect material for many projects. Vacu-formed, glued, shaped, sanded, etc...it's the go-to material that model/prop/cosplay builders use all the time. Seems to me that you should chuck this material and buy the real thing. Less frustration and better results in the end(y)

Okay. I think I've finally made some headway. I have an assembled chest piece. Planning to add detail tomorrow because it's 2am and I'm tired now.

As a base it's good...no need to say that the sanding part will be key to have a very good chest piece. Are you using Gorilla Crazy Glue?

So... You're not gonna believe it. But I dropped it, and it fell apart. Either way, this run was encouraging. And I plan to keep trying until I get it right.

I use sintra for quite a few weapons and props. The glue I use is the thicker gap filling type and the kicker spray. It gives you a little more time to position your parts and then spray 'em. This plasma cannon was made using 1/8inch foam board for example

I used the thick stuff to fill my seams and glued from both sides. I think the brand was Bob Smith Industries, which shouldn't really matter. Cya glue is pretty much the same

oooohh, boiling water bath. Now theres a good idea. Thank you. Much easier to whip up a big tub than a big oven to heat something evenly. Thank you
