Ethical question concerning mark x tricorder graphics... looking for opinions.

Yup... just curious

I've bought a few replicas... mostly resin messes... but I did get my hands on a very decent copy of the mark x tricorder graphics.

My question is... if I were to start making mark x trics, my own design, (not recasts! ) is it okay to reproduce the graphics or is that considered stealing, recasting etc.?

I guess I should just ask permission from the person who sold them to me but I wanted to get the community opinion as well.

Keep in mind I am aware of what recasting means in the prop community and would never do such a thing. This is why I'm asking up front!

So what do you all think?

Yeah speaking as a graphic designer myself, just scanning and printing somebody else's artwork for sale to others would be a no-no.

I'd recommend drawing up your own artwork in Illustrator or Photoshop, or perhaps hiring an artist to do the artwork. It can be "based on" the other artwork (it pretty much has to be, if the source artwork is at all accurate), but somebody has to put new lines down for it to be "yours".

Of course if you ask the original artist and permission is given, it's OK then. :lol

That's pretty much what I figured. Thanks though. I've tried to make some graphics before in Paintshop and I gotta say... for some reason I have a hard time grasping vector graphics. Don't know why... My stuff just always comes out looking horrible and very kindergarden. Thanks again though.

Heck, if you want a set of ultra clean, super accurate graphics in vector format, just drop me a line. I drew a set up a few years ago from a scan of production made graphics.

As someone who had his tricorder graphics ripped of and copied numerous times, I know how it feels. At this point in my "career", I'd be just as happy to save you a bunch of time and effort by turning them over to you for use. Just kick something my way when you have a chance, and we'll call it even. Drop me an email.

Matt - you the bomb! Thanks alot man! I'll send you an email a little later tonight. I'm still at work and it's crazy busy tonight. But thanks again... a million thanks... tank you tank you tank you very much.

Wow - I guess now I really gotta come through with my project huh?!:lol

You know what - let me rephrase this... It really makes me feel like part of a good community when the guys that have been at this for a long time throw you a bone like this. Makes me feel accepted. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I know some other communities are not as helpful and I just wanna say it makes me happy to be a part of this group.
