ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK filming locations in St. Louis?

I'm going to be in St. Louis this weekend giving a lecture on my intense inherent awesomeness at Lewis and Clark and book signing at Star Clipper in the Hub for Free Comic Book Day, but Friday night and Saturday morning, I'm going to be driven around by a couple of comics fans and they asked me what I want to see. So, I know part of the movie was shot at Union Station and the wrestling scene is now the lobby of the Hyatt, and of course the "Chain of Rocks" bridge is a must. I don't know if we can get into the Fox Theatre where Snake meets Ernest Borgnine... but does anyone know the streets some of the iconic Presidential pod shots were filmed on?

Drove through St. Louis a couple of years ago and was struck by the great number of abandoned and decrepit buildings and factories. As someone who is intrigued by urban decay, I wanted to go explore. ;) I did say "great place to make a movie"...

All I know is the Duke is A Number 1! :lol

Post some pics if you can!

Aye, if there is one thing about it...St Louis has some pretty...ehh...exotic...place to film at.

I was under the impression that one of the reasons the area looked so decrepit was that they were starting an urban renewal project at the time of the filming and that some of the buildings were going to be torn down.

It appears that the Fox Theater was spared, and in fact, has been restored:

Not sure if the interiors were filmed there or at the Wiltern her in L.A. (both are credited with being in the movie).

Myself and a few other hardcore EFNY fans stayed at the Hyatt and held a mini"PlissKon" (aka SnakeEscape) in 2008. We were even allowed to screen EFNY in the bar/lobby area, and the staff flipped out when they saw their workplace on screen as the Duke's wrestling ring.

Here's a thread on an EFNY forum (you have to register to view it, though) that has most of the location info:

Hope this helps. Enjoy your trip, and if you have any specific ?s, feel free to PM me. And if you take any photos, please share. :)

Holy crap, that's the motherlode. Thanks very much. I'm not sure how much of this I'll be able to get to/see, but if I don't/can't it's my fault and not yours because that's all I need to know, right there. I sure do appreciate it.

If you get a chance to get across the river, Fast Eddies in Alton is a decent touristy spot, really cheap yet really good food.

Fast Eddies is EXCELLENT.. foodwise anyway. The beer is as good as you'd get anywhere else but the food is the real draw.

If you're a little more "daring" you could always try PT's which is listed at the end of the Escape From New York credits. I've never been there personally but it's a strip club.

I try to get to the old chain of rocks bridge anytime I'm in the area. Used to go at least twice a month when I lived there.

You're welcome...not a problem. Glad to help another EFNY fan make the 'pilgramage'!

One place I forgot to mention that you may want to eat at/check out while you're downtown is the Tap Room:

The building it's in is recognizable as one that Snake walks by on his way to the crashed plane. All us 'Snakes' and our families went there in costume for dinner, and they were pretty cool. Food and beer not too bad, either. It's on Locust and 21st, which is a' 'hub' for many of the locations in the film.

I realize this post is 3 years old, but I thought I'd chime in on the chance anyone searches & lands here looking for where Escape from New York was filmed in St. Louis. As a huge fan, I've researched it extensively--it bugged me until I saw it for myself.

These are mainly exterior shots--many of the interiors were on sound-stages or have been previously documented. You can "tour" the exteriors I list below with "street view" on google maps.

The "President's Pod" scene, I believe, was filmed on St. Charles St. between 17th & 18th streets in St. Louis, closer to 18th St. The scene was shot facing west toward 18th St. on St. Charles. The pod sits in the northeast corner of the building on the southeast side of St. Charles & 18th St (sadly now repaired--not even a Presidential Pod tribute. Boo!). The building on the northeast corner of that intersection appears to have been demolished, but if you freeze the scene as Romero walks toward Hauk (he walks east down St. Charles St.), I think you'll recognize the building on the northWEST corner of the intersection to be the building in the background that still stands there today (this is the building Hauk focuses on when Romero laughs & then you can see Romero's shadow on it). This is also where Snakes sits later in despair after returning empty-handed from the theatre. There is also one shot east down St. Charles from 18th Street as Snake starts to run away from the Crazies as they emerge.

The parking lot where the helicopters land when Hauk first goes in to retrieve the President (before he sends Snake) is just northeast of St. Charles & North 17th street. If you use street-view on google-maps & look northeast, you'll still recognize the building that was behind the choppers as they landed. The parking lot is still--well, a parking lot. :)

The building facade in the distant background of the chopper scene that says "Anchor" on both sides of the archway is still there, too (though it no longer says "Anchor" on the windows) @ 1619 Washington Ave.

The Theatre scene, as mentioned above, was shot @ The Fox Theatre at 527 N Grand Blvd.

Brain's pad (aka "The New York Public Library") was shot @ the St. Louis Masonic Temple @ 3670 Lindell Blvd (PS--have to type "Blvd." in or you'll get the wrong address on street-view).

The big fight with Slag (Ox Baker) was filmed in the Grand Hall, Union Station @ 1820 Market St.

As noted above, the Chain of Rocks Bridge (Madison, IL) serves as the set for the final run to save the President (with mines & where Brain & Maggie *spoiler* get killed).

Likewise, Snake passes what is now the Schlafly Taproom (as mentioned above) on his way to the plane crash in a small park. The building (complete with small gated arch, still there!) is on the southwest corner of Locust St & 21 St. The building on the northwest corner is still there, as are the buildings in the background north of the park (which I believe are now luxury loft condo's) & the small park itself (on the northeast corner of the intersection).

Happy hunting--Escape from New York. Such a great movie!
