ERASER - Arnie´s Rail gun ?

Re: Rail gun

I have never heard of one, but that gun is really awesome.

Especially when arnies has two of them "rawr" "get to da chapah"!!

Re: Rail gun

Ahhh.... the rail guns! I worked on Eraser, and I have to admit I was really let down when I got to take a look at the actual Rail Gun props (hope nobody on this forum built them!). Sounded so promising in the script, but the actual guns looked so kit bashed - very reminiscent of the original Galactica blasters, yet much more fragile in appearance. If somebody does make a kit - they have to be sure to include the mechanical barrel recoil!

Re: Rail gun

I'll admit that having the gun prop would be cool if you had enough room to display it. :cool

BUT... the people that did the "projectile" visual FX needed to be FIRED. Rail guns fire HYPERVELOCITY projectiles... bullets that move many times FASTER than a normal bullet. Whereas the bullets from a normal gun have their "muzzle velocity" measured in Feet Per Second, with rail guns, the rounds are so fast, the velocity is typically measured in MILES Per Second! :eek

And yet, in the movie Eraser, whenever the rail gun is fired, you see a visible, missile-like projectile crawling SLOWLY across the screen, as if it were a kid's home-made model rocket, not a hypervelocity projectile moving at several Miles Per Second!

oh come on.. if they'd done it right we wouldn't have had much of a film to watch.. you know, Arnie gets shot at... gets hit.. and his skin rips off his body following the projectile THROUGH him.

O.K. so I know someone is going to tell me that it's impossible but I mean we ARE discussing a hollywood film so uh... anythings possible ;)

Re: Rail gun

What do we know about that grenade thingy that pops up into the air and fires skrews into arnolds hand?

Actually, im pretty sure thats NOT the projectile we are seeing on screen, but actually the superheated air creating a vortex of circular heat rings as the projectile moves so insanely fast.

Yes, that's what it was supposed to be. I actually owned one of the stunt/backdrop railguns from the warehouse scene and I'm with Tiki, it was a very slapped together mess. It paled so much in comparison to the gas-fired heroes that I couldn't wait to get rid of the thing in a trade.

It was a very cool looking weapon in conception, tho'.

Re: Rail gun

I found some pics of the Railgun a while ago.

They may be of use if anyone decides to tackle this project

If they infringe upon anything or cause any offence please drop me a PM and I'll take them down.

Otto.

Re: Rail gun

This was just on tv tonight and I was wondering if anyone ever did this. Guess not. Tiki- what was the base of this gun? Or was it all scratched together?
