EP VII Millennium Falcon

apart from scale, they are about 80% identical, with the main differences being the curves cut out of the dish, a few extra greebles, and the support structure is completely different. I'll be interested to see what other ideas they had when the making of book comes out.

So, other than them being similar, they are totally different!

Actually, considering the Tantive was supposed to the Falcon - this is a nice nod to the original design and designers.

very true, although when the Tantive was the Falcon, it had the round dish.

and yeah I guess I was pretty much saying, yeah they're the same except totally different. But either way, I still want to see what else they came up with. I kind of want to make a series of absurd concept sketches, like a big TV aerial, or a christmas tree or something.

Doh! Forgot about that. Details, Details - round, rectangular...

Yes - I think you should do a series of things Lando presented to Han after ROTJ! Like he wouldn't notice...

: )

Your added details are perfectly detailed and the 3 Koolshade image examples look great -- But you should also look at doing a seperate Ambient Occlussion and applying it to the image with photoshop -- If your not sure how that will look, I did up a quick rough image for you using PS to simulate the occlusion --

Ha, Vacformed, that's brilliant. I'm now pretty much convinced that's what they were going for when the made the plate layout, it sure would explain its weird shape, heh heh.

oslm, that does give it some good punch, I may have to try that.

If you do try it out, you will find that the AO Pass that 3DS Max does will be better then the rough version I got out of Photoshop -- not only will the details get highlighted but the shadows will also look better --

Just out of curiosity, what is the file size of your model, my guess would be somewhere around 25 MB

This is a question for SteveStarkilller.
Where did you get the images to draw the new Falcon guns?
I decided to go spoiler free from now up to TFA, so it seems I've missed these images. I saw the magazine cover and inside pic at the time but don't remember being able to see the guns. I expected that one of the things they may change would be the guns. I recall being annoyed at Eiger's head being in the way on the cover so we couldn't see the guns.
Love your work.

hey CrazyCraig, there was a leaked image showing the new gun hanging under the fullscale falcon they've built. It's pretty blurry, but I was able to get the general idea of the shape. Essentially my quad laser is just a guess though, since yeah Bob Iger needs to get out of the way...

mikeyscience, not sure exactly what I'll be doing with this once it's done, but the theory is that it will be available as a reference for folks who want to make a practical model, or modify existing kits to match the new Falcon.

haven't had a chance to try everyone's suggestions yet, but I was fooling around with the engine a bit this morning.

not bad... still not sure about what exactly is going on inside the engine grill.

this one was rendered with indigo from sketchup, which is similar to the iray renderer you suggested (physical light). I'm fooling around with the settings in max as you suggested.
