Empire Strikes Back question...

Luke guided his hand to land in a certain place then followed it down using the Force.

That's why he looks down just before he jumps.

......well.....it makes as much sense as the Prequels.

Here's something I noticed while watching the scene. If it is his hand, or something of similar size, don't you think it fades into the clouds a little too quickly? If you look at the screen shot, you can see that huge pole like structure that's underneath Cloud City. Given it's sheer scale, I would assume that sucker stretches down for at least a mile. The way that hand/debris fades away makes the clouds look like they're 50 feet below Luke, not a mile. I therefore conclude that Cloud City is only 500 feet wide and 100 feet tall.

Maybe Adywan will fix it. :cool

Not sure if this is actual script or a fanmade transcript, but this is from IMSDB.com

EXT. BOTTOM OF CLOUD CITY - WEATHER VANE - DUSK

Unable to hang onto the pipe, Luke tumbles out, emerging at the
undermost part of Cloud City. Reaching out desperately, he manages to
grab onto on electronic weather vane.

LUKE
Ben... Ben, please!

Luke tries to pull himself up on the weather vane but slips back down.
He hooks one of his legs around the fragile instruments. All the
while, a powerful current of air rushes out at him from the exhaust
pipe.

LUKE
Ben. Leia!

There is an ominous cracking sound from the base of the
weather vane and a piece breaks off, falling into the clouds far below.

LUKE
Hear me! Leia!

Slowly... Walking... Away from this topic... LOL!

Ok scale-wise...

Its not his hand/sleeve, his sleeve never got cut

His blaster is right there

Look at how big it is compared to the stem of the city

The piece of weather vane would have to be at least 500 feet wide and much more massive than the Millenium Falcon. I don't mind how it was written or anything... I jus wanna know wat the frick is that thing?

You guys are idiots. The answer has been staring you in the face this WHOLE TIME.

See, problem solved. Must I fix everything?

Mk IV gravitation sensor! Haven't seen one in years.
Lando was running that joint on the cheap!
No wonder it broke off.

If its his hand, that is the stupidest idea in Star Wars, even worse than Jar Jar.

You see Luke land in that tube BEFORE it opens, no hand.

Yes the EU says the hand was recovered, that would mean it wasn't what fell outside of the city INTO the giant ball of gravity that would crush it into anything useable.

My vote is on something out of one of his pouches, or a piece of the antenna that broke his fall.

We don't see Luke in that particular tube before it opens. He comes to a stop in one tube, a trap door opens below him, and then he goes down another tube, and it shows the hatch open from outside. My in-universe guess is that the same debris-dispensing fields/currents were in place between the hand fall and the person fall, so they both were shunted to the same chute for disposal.

I ain't saying it's the greatest movie moment in the world, but it's a friggin' meathook wrapped around a silver tube. ;)

It's a guy with Hammerpants skydiving. Maybe he was cleaning under that tube and Luke knocked him plummeting.

It's antenna debris. Debris falling adds a slight bit of character to the shot so we are aware that Luke is in danger and gravity DOES exist outside of the floating city. For all we know gravity is generated on the floating platforms so now we know it exists beyond.

I always thought it was his hand and lightsaber, never thought anymore about it but after looking at the screencap I think its just some random debris to add effect.

It couldn't be his hand and lightsaber. Luke had to use the Force to direct his fall into the shoot he ended up in. The hand and saber would have just fallen straight down and it would have taken a miracle for it to be directed to that same hole before he got there.

Also, EU canon. Except when it's not.
