The EU is not cannon no is It a cannon but as I understand it it is considered secondary canon where it is trumped by anything in the movies and/or anything that Lucas declares to be canon like that one video game involving Vader 's apprentice.

It's what Mickey says now!

What the EU decided it is, canon or not, is irrelevant, as that decision took place quite some time after filming. When the makers of the movie did that shot of the thing falling, what did THEY think it was? We need Lorne or someone who might've worked on that shot to settle this once and for all!

No, but it is Canon ;)

Lucas said a long time ago, in a... uh that the EU books were canon. But really, who cares? It won't make you like it any more or less just because it may or may not be considered "canon".

As far as I'm concerned Lucas himself stopped being canon after ESB so his opinion really doesn't count.

the argument continues because he never did specifically personally say that.
he did however let it be known that anything beyond the movies is irrelevant to the FILM CONTINUITY.

anyhow, that's obviously not a hand in that screenshot lol

Interesting article linked over here (http://www.therpf.com/f47/symmetry-empire-strikes-back-214248/) talking about the symmetrical nature of the story of ESB. In the analysis, the writer says...

F. Luke Uses the Force to Get Free

Hanging upside down from the top of an icy cave, Luke uses the Force to grab his fallen lightsaber and free himself. Later, Luke hangs upside down from some metal poles underneath Cloud City and watches as his lightsaber falls beneath the clouds. He uses the Force to call for help.

I think we've agreed that it's NOT his lightsaber, but if it was, it would certainly support the writer's argument.

Oh, and the canon discussion is amusing in light of recent news.

It just doesn't make sense that it was the lightsaber. The saber fell several minutes before Luke jumped, it would have been long gone by the time Luke was hanging from the rigging.

There's another thread with the debate, and if we want to continue it should be there, but it was his severed hand holding the saber.

EDIT: Oh, it **IS** this thread! :lol

Here's the first frame from the BD, doesn't look like a lightsaber.

Looks more like a Bespin worker brown-bagged his lunch, and threw the empty bag over the side.
