EFX TOS Battlestar Viper Pilot Helmet

Gotta have one, since for some reason those helmets can keep you alive in space even though you are basically wearing street clothes and not a pressure suit. :lol

I checked out the prototype at con and it looked great, I think i'll pick one up too when they come out

Excuse me, they most defintely wore flight suits. Don't you remember the scene where they showed all the girl pilots in just their flightsuits.

And the glowing lights in the helmet are a forcefield.

Well YES of COURSE I remember that scene... It played a huge role in my dreams for years afterwards. :lol

But seriously, those suits would at BEST only provide mechanical compression to most of the body (the head, neck, hands and feet are still unprotected). This is not good enough to keep you alive in space

In "Fire in Space" Apollo and Starbuck go EVA to plant explosives on the hull of Galactica (If I remember correctly), and you can see bare skin between their gloves and jacket sleeves. There is no proper "pressure suit" to be found in TOS Galactica.

Even IF the glowing edges of the "faceplate" are a forcefield, this will not keep air in since it can escape though the neck. In any case there is no oxygen supply at all (a common problem in movie and TV "space suits").

RDM Galactica does far better with the Viper flight suits, which DO seem plausible by comparison.

Ya know, it never even occurred to me way-back-when, but now that you pointed it out it bugs me! Thanks guys! :angry lol

Hey, heeyyy... maybe they were just melon protectors like racecar helmets and the ships were sealed and shielded and the lights were a sneeze guard force field -- yeah I'll go with that. Whew!

Now what was the topic, oh yeah, those EFX helmets look promising! :thumbsup

Lets not forget the issue that when the viper takes off your head and body smoosh into the seat causing the microphone part to flip up and smack you in the face. I ferget which episode where a chick got it but it's there.

Very old news.

It has been in developement for over a year now.

The GOOD news is after talking with Brian the prototype just came back and he told me it should be up for order by the end of the year with delivery in the first few months of 2010.

You know I will be ordering at least one.

A Warrior can never have too many helmets around! :lol

I would have been interested till i read this. :thumbsdown

Using this hero, we digitally scanned the helmet and passed the data to Mark Costas, our digital modeler, to clean up and correct the asymmetry of the original sculpt and fiberglass casting.
Mark remodeled the scan data, mirroring one side across to the other and adjusted the dimensions to make sure that they "fit" within the confines of the original scan data.
This gave us with a perfectly engineered symmetrical helmet which remains accurate in overall size to the hero helmet it was modeled from. Luckily another private collector stepped forward and offered us the chance to compare our digital hero helmet with his original Captain Apollo hero helmet. Side by side they looked spot on.

How by the Lords of Kobol can a cleaned up symmetrical mirrored helmet look spot on next to an original hero helmet ?
The phrase " clean up and CORRECT the asymmetry " makes me :sick

Isn't that what they did with Vader's helmet in Episode III?

Oh. :lol

Well maybe it won't be so critical on the Viper helmet... :rolleyes

"CORRECT the asymmetry" like clean the lines up and make them sharper, what's wrong with that

"mirroring one side across to the other and adjusted the dimensions to make sure that they "fit" within the confines of the original scan data."

This is a bit more than cleaning up the lines. It's fine if you want an idealized version but i would have much rather seen a accurate prop replica not what Efx thinks it should look like.

It's often the slight asymmetry that gives a piece its unique feeling of personality.

Straighten out all the lines and suddenly it looks like a dud. :lol

Or you could end up with a piece that has the wrong angles, or is too wide or narrow... I'm not saying this is happening with the eFX Viper Helmet, only that it COULD happen.

The Episode III Vader helmet, for example, was forced into symmetry and that robbed it of the "personality" it had due to the drooping cheek and other oddball angles.

Maybe the helmet generates a forcefield around the entire body, like the life support belts in the Star Trek animated series?

Having built a dozen or so helmets cast from an original, I can assure you that you would want the helmet cleaned up!

There's no way eFX could send out something cast directly from one of the original helmets. People would be screaming, "You sent me a wonky-ass helmet!" Depending on the helmet, some of those vents in the back are all over the place and simply do not look good under close inspection.

While some people scream for 'original' they seldom enjoy seeing the wizard behind the curtain when it's right under their nose.

I'm sure this will be a striking piece when it's completed. I know I'm getting one!

I'd be screaming like a 5 year old at Christmas with joy if they sent out direct casts of the original, a bit of clean up i could just about stand but taking away the assymetry of the original just makes it fundamentally a whole new sculpt, so what's the point in taking scans or molds from the original ?
Just sculpt a new helmet.
